Deep eutectic solvents for improved biomass pretreatment: Current status and future prospective towards sustainable processes

Maria del Mar Contreras-Gamez et al.

Summary: Pretreatment processes are crucial for efficient biomass refining, and in the past two decades deep eutectic solvents (DES) have emerged as an alternative, offering more sustainable processes with both environmental and economic benefits. This paper provides an updated review of DES-based applications in biorefinery schemes, discussing their composition, synthesis, recycling, and existing techno-economic and life cycle assessment studies. Challenges, barriers, and perspectives for the scale-up of DES-based processes are also discussed.

Mechanism study of ternary deep eutectic solvents with protonic acid for lignin fractionation

Weixian Wang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the fractionation of lignin using ternary deep eutectic solvents (DES) with different polyols. The results show that ChCl-EG-PTSA DES exhibits the highest degradability towards lignin, with a high total interaction energy and number of hydrogen bonds. ChCl plays a dominant role in lignin fractionation and forms hydrogen bonds with γ-OH, while the polyols prefer to form hydrogen bonds with α-OH. The addition of PTSA disrupts the stacking interactions between lignin molecules and enhances the interaction between DES and lignin.

Probing the mechanism of green solvent solubilization of hemicellulose based on molecular dynamics simulations

Weixian Wang et al.

Summary: This paper studied the solubilization effect of three ionic liquids and three choline chloride-based deep eutectic solvents for xylan using molecular dynamics method. The results showed that all six solvents had good solubility for xylan and the solubilization mechanisms of the two green solvents were similar, based on the strong hydrogen bond between the anion and the hydroxyl group on the xylan model. The addition of water formed a new hydrogen bonding network, which enhanced the interaction of xylan with choline chloride/urea and promoted dissolution.

Comprehensive utilization of corncob for furfuryl alcohol production by chemo-enzymatic sequential catalysis in a biphasic system

Chong-Yang Bu et al.

Summary: A new process for producing furfuryl alcohol from corncob was proposed using deep eutectic solvents and whole cell catalysis. The process involved pretreating corncob with deep eutectic solvents to convert xylan into furfural, enzymatic hydrolysis to obtain glucose-rich enzymatic hydrolysate, and using NADH for furfural reduction. The final furfuryl alcohol yield reached 20.7% with corncob as substrate, demonstrating high-value production and comprehensive utilization of corncob.

Mechanism of Deep Eutectic Solvent Delignification: Insights from Molecular Dynamics Simulations

Huanfei Xu et al.

Summary: In this study, a pretreatment method for a lignin-carbohydrate complex model in choline chloride-based deep eutectic solvents was proposed, where breaking of beta-O-4 ether and glycosidic bonds was observed at an optimal temperature of 373 K. The presence of free protons in the deep eutectic solvents played a crucial role in biomass delignification, with acidic hydrogen bonding donors showing high lignin removal rates. Molecular dynamics simulations indicated that choline chloride/glycerol with a slightly weaker hydrogen bonding network exhibited better binding and solubilization capabilities for product molecules.
