Mechanistic evaluation of chromium bioremediation in Acinetobacter junii strain b2w: A proteomic approach

Pooja Sevak et al.

Summary: The present study focuses on the bioremediation of chromium, a highly toxic and prominent heavy metal pollutant, by the bacterial isolate Acinetobacter junii strain b2w. The isolate demonstrated resistance to high concentrations of chromium and was able to effectively remove and reduce chromium in a controlled experimental setting. It also displayed tolerance to other heavy metals and a wide range of pH and salinity conditions. The study suggests that Acinetobacter junii has the potential to be applied for chromium bioremediation based on its bioremediation capabilities and molecular responses.

Halloysite nanotube confined interface engineering enhanced catalytic oxidation of photo-Fenton reaction for aniline aerofloat degradation: Defective heterojunction for electron transfer regulation

Wei Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, a spatial confinement structure of HNTs@MoS2/Fe was constructed for the complete degradation of AAF. The results showed that nearly 99% of AAF was degraded within 60 minutes of the photo-Fenton reaction. The catalyst exhibited high durability and efficiency in degrading AAF due to its ability to adjust the pH of the reaction system and the presence of unsaturated S edges and defects that promote active sites and electron transfer.

In situ remediation of Cr(VI) contaminated groundwater by ZVI-PRB and the corresponding indigenous microbial community responses: a field-scale study

Qing Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that a permeable reactive barrier (PRB) successfully reduced hexavalent chromium (Cr (VI)) concentrations through chemical reduction, impacting the indigenous microbial community structure. Competitive growth among Cr(VI)-reducing bacteria was observed in the PRB area, while Cr(VI)-reducing bacteria were enriched downgradient, indicating further bio-reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III). This bio-reduction could serve as a secondary mechanism for prolonged removal of Cr(VI) from groundwater, influenced by environmental factors such as pH, dissolved oxygen, Cr(VI) levels, oxidation-reduction potential, and temperature.

Effects of further composting black soldier fly larvae manure on toxic metals and resistant bacteria communities by cornstalk amendment

Tao Liu et al.

Summary: The study found that adding cornstalk in BSFL manure composting can enhance the immobilization rate of toxic metals in the final product. By adjusting environmental factors and potential hosts bacteria, the addition of cornstalk significantly impacts the distribution of main resistant bacteria, thereby improving the quality of composting and the final product.

Microbial community and metabolic characteristics evaluation in start-up stage of electro-enhanced SBR for aniline wastewater treatment

Jiapeng Feng et al.

Summary: An electro-enhanced sequencing batch reactor (E-SBR) was used to treat aniline wastewater efficiently and achieved high nitrogen removal rate. The microbial community in E-SBR changed significantly, with the enrichment of functional microorganisms that played a crucial role in pollutant removal. The metabolism of microorganisms in E-SBR system was different from that in traditional SBR system.

Exploring the impact of intensity and duration of Cu (II) depression on aniline-degrading biosystem: Performance, sludge activity and microbial diversity

Junhao Su et al.

Summary: The ecological risk of aniline wastewater biodegradation was evaluated under the stress of different concentrations of Cu(II). Cu(II) stress below 6 mg/L caused slight fluctuations in aniline degradation and significant inhibition of nitrogen removal. Nitrifying performance showed higher tolerance to Cu(II) than denitrifying performance. Cu(II) stress at 10 mg/L led to the collapse of the biosystem and disabled the decontamination function. The dominance of heavy-metal tolerant genera, such as Zoogloea and Azospira, under continuous Cu(II) stress did not result in comparable aniline and nitrogen removal performance as the control group.

The changing C/N of aggressive aniline: Metagenomic analysis of pollutant removal, metabolic pathways and functional genes

Yunjie Zhang et al.

Summary: By studying the operation of sequencing batch bioaugmentation reactors with different aniline concentrations, it was found that the removal rates of aniline and COD can reach 100%. The nitrogen removal efficiency reached its peak when the aniline concentration was 600 mg/L, but the toxicity of high concentrations of aniline inhibited nitrification.

Microbial community and function evaluation in the start-up period of bioaugmented SBR fed with aniline wastewater

Wenli Zhang et al.

Summary: An enhanced sequencing batch reactor (SBR) system was developed to treat synthetic wastewater rich in 600 mg/L aniline, achieving almost 100% aniline degradation efficiency and over 50% total nitrogen (TN) removal rate. Metagenomics technology revealed the community structure, functional genes, and metabolic mechanism, identifying dominant phyla such as Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Chloroflexi, and Actinobacteria. Functional genes involved in aniline degradation and nitrogen metabolism were detected, showing the cooperation and competition of Thauera, Delftia, Diaphorobacter, Micavibrio, and Azoarcus ensured the effective removal of aniline and nitrogen.

Summary: The rejection performance of forward osmosis membranes for the mixed pollutants of antimony, chromium, and aniline in printing and dyeing wastewater can be enhanced by adjusting the cross-linking degree of the polyamide selective layer and the concentration and type of draw solution. By using specific membranes and draw solutions, rejection efficiencies of over 98% can be achieved for these contaminants in secondary clarifier effluent from a printing and dyeing factory.

New insights into the evolution of bacterial community during the domestication of phthalate-degrading consortium

Xue-Jing Huang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the successional variation of bacterial community and metabolism during the enrichment culture of a phthalate-degrading consortium. Results showed a significant increase in extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) during domestication, while bacterial richness and diversity decreased significantly. Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes became dominant phyla associated with phthalate tolerance and degradation. The microbial interaction networks revealed a coexistence of mutualism and competition among members of the bacterial consortium.

The role of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) in the reduction of Cr (VI) by Pannonibacter phragmitetus BB

Yangyang Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that the secretion of EPS by P. phragmitetus BB in Cr(VI) remediation is influenced by the concentration of Cr(VI). Removal of EPS inhibits bacterial growth and decreases Cr(VI) reduction efficiency. EPS plays a critical role in Cr(VI) remediation, with protein and polysaccharide content impacted by Cr(VI) concentration.
