Treated wastewater and weak removal mechanisms enhance nitrate pollution in metropolitan rivers

Guanghui Zhao et al.

Summary: This study used stable isotopes to investigate the sources and transformation processes of nitrate in Suzhou Creek. The results showed that treated wastewater, soil nitrogen, and nitrogen fertilizer were the main sources of nitrate in the river. Reducing nitrate concentrations in treated wastewater is crucial for addressing nitrogen pollution in urban rivers.

Improving denitrification performance of biofilm technology with salt-tolerant denitrifying bacteria agent for treating high-strength nitrate and sulfate wastewater from lab-scale to pilot-scale

Lijuan Feng et al.

Summary: This study focused on the application of salt-tolerant denitrifying bacteria in an optimized biofilm process to treat high sulfate-nitrate wastewater. The results showed that salinity, DBA inoculum, supplementary carbon and phosphorus source significantly influenced the startup periods. In pilot-scale, the denitrification efficiency reached above 90% after gradient-salinity treatment, and mature biofilm contained various genera of bacteria.

Insight into halotolerance of a robust heterotrophic nitrifying and aerobic denitrifying bacterium Halomonas salifodinae

Jie Hu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the ability of a halophilic bacterium to perform simultaneous nitrification and denitrification in hypersaline wastewater, as well as its halotolerant mechanism. The results show that the isolated strain can efficiently remove nitrogen at 15% salinity and exhibits high resistance to various salts and heavy metals. Metabolic analysis reveals that the bacterium accumulates compatible solutes to resist high osmotic pressure and bound water molecules, achieving efficient nitrification and denitrification processes.

A novel Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain performs simultaneous heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification and aerobic phosphate removal

Mei-Qi Huang et al.

Summary: A novel strain affiliated with Pseudomonas aeruginosa was isolated in this study, which was capable of heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification and aerobic phosphate removal. Under optimal conditions, the strain showed high removal efficiencies of ammonium (87%) and phosphate (97%). Gene amplification experiments revealed that the ammonium removal followed the complete HN-AD pathway, while phosphate removal only occurred under aerobic conditions.

Jing Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a high efficient denitrifying bacterium Y23 was isolated from production brine of an oilfield. Y23 showed good sedimentation and immobilization properties and exhibited excellent denitrification performance under high dissolved oxygen concentration. Augmentation of Y23 in a reactor enhanced the removal efficiencies of nitrogen and chemical oxygen demand.

Effect of the rapid increase of salinity on anoxic-oxic biofilm reactor for treatment of high-salt and high-ammonia-nitrogen wastewater

Bixiao Ji et al.

Summary: A novel anoxic/oxic biofilm process was developed to remove ammonia from washing wastewater from power plants. Rapid strategies were found to excel at ammonia removal under high salinity conditions after reducing organic load, while excessive organics inhibited nitrification capacity of the biofilm. Control of organic load may prevent the sulfur cycle.

Simultaneous removal of nitrite and organics in a biofilm-enhanced high-salt wastewater treatment system via mixotrophic denitrification coupled with sulfate reduction

Wei Li et al.

Summary: The integration of sulfate reduction, heterotrophic denitrification and autotrophic denitrification in a biofilm-enhanced high-salt wastewater treatment system was studied, with sulfate reduction acting as an intermediate reaction. The metabolic pathways of carbon, nitrogen and sulfur were discussed based on functional genes analysis, along with the study of reactor performances and spatial distribution of bacterial communities. The removal efficiencies of nitrite and organics reached 100% due to the stable and functional bacterial community, with specific dominant functional bacteria in the biofilm.

Effects of C/N ratio and dissolved oxygen on aerobic denitrification process: A mathematical modeling study

Bo Hu et al.

Summary: The C/N ratio and DO concentration are crucial factors influencing the aerobic denitrification process, with the model revealing that nitrogen removal efficiency increases with higher C/N ratio and lower DO concentration. The synthesis of cell internal storage products is impacted by C/N ratio, while the effects of DO concentration are due to competition for substrate between heterotrophs and aerobic denitrifiers.
