Microbial Degradation of Aldrin and Dieldrin: Mechanisms and Biochemical Pathways

Shimei Pang et al.

Summary: Aldrin and dieldrin, members of the organochlorine group of insecticides, have been widely used in agriculture but have caused severe pollution due to excessive use and a long half-life. They are highly toxic to humans and non-target organisms, leading to a global ban. Microbial degradation is considered the most promising method for their removal, and several microorganisms capable of degrading them have been identified. Degradation pathways and metabolites of aldrin and dieldrin have been investigated. This review provides a theoretical and practical basis for the bioremediation of aldrin/dieldrin-polluted environments.

Plants exert beneficial influence on soil microbiome in a HCH contaminated soil revealing advantage of microbe-assisted plant-based HCH remediation of a dumpsite

Ispreet Kaur et al.

Summary: The persistence of hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) pesticide in soil poses a major challenge for disposal, with microbial communities in plant rhizospheric soils showing higher diversity and richness compared to non-plant soil. Selected plants at contaminated sites have accumulated HCH residues from soil and positively influenced soil microbial communities, supporting the use of microbe-assisted plant-based bioremediation strategies for HCH contamination.

Biotechnological basis of microbial consortia for the removal of pesticides from the environment

Pankaj Bhatt et al.

Summary: Microbial strains as axenic cultures have been widely used in various sectors, with natural environment emphasizing the importance of multi-species consortia over monocultures. Cell signaling and communication pathways are crucial in engineering microbial consortia, where communication occurs through diffusible signal molecules. The lack of knowledge regarding interactions among mixed microbial cultures has hindered their exploration, but recent studies have proposed ideas for studying microbial communities for biotechnological applications. Unique metabolic features of microbes in natural environments are divided among strains within microbial consortia, which exhibit robust performance in pesticide degradation. Additionally, synthetic microbial consortia have shown promise in performing functions at naturally contaminated sites. This review focuses on the applications and future directions of microbial consortia, exploring new platforms and future perspectives while emphasizing the practical application of scientific information.

Myco-remediation of Chlorinated Pesticides: Insights Into Fungal Metabolic System

Priyanka Bokade et al.

Summary: Synthetic chemicals, including organochlorine pesticides, pose hazards to the environment and health due to their persistent and bioaccumulative properties. Fungi play a crucial role in biotransformation and degradation of toxic pollutants, with potential use of fungal-derived biomaterials for pesticide and heavy metal removal. Utilizing fungi for initial biotransformation purposes before bacterial degradation shows promise in overcoming existing bioremediation limitations.

Extra-Heavy Crude Oil Degradation by Alternaria sp. Isolated from Deep-Sea Sediments of the Gulf of Mexico

Lucia Romero-Hernandez et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the ability of fungal isolates obtained from deep-sea sediments in the Mexican EEZ of the Gulf of Mexico to degrade heavy crude oil (HCO) and extra-heavy crude oil (EHCO). Results showed that Alternaria sp. fungi were able to grow and efficiently degrade EHCO as the sole carbon source, demonstrating its potential for bioremediation in future studies.
