Barriers against and strategies for malaria control during the COVID-19 pandemic in low- and middle-income countries: a systematic review

Jiwook Park et al.

Summary: This study aims to identify barriers and strategies for malaria control, especially in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Lockdown measures were identified as a major barrier, while clear risk communication strategies were found to alleviate psychosocial barriers. Cross-cutting strategies that integrate all dimensions are needed to enhance the availability and affordability of malaria control.

Recent approaches in the drug research and development of novel antimalarial drugs with new targets

Naveen Kumar Reddy Chinnappanna et al.

Summary: Malaria is a global health issue with high mortality and morbidity rates. Limited treatment options and drug resistance have made the development of novel antimalarial agents a pressing need. Various approaches, including modification of existing drugs and creation of new compounds, are being explored to target different aspects of the parasite's biology.

Vector control in China, from malaria endemic to elimination and challenges ahead

Xinyu Feng et al.

Summary: Background vector control is crucial in preventing and controlling malaria. This review systematically summarizes the evolution, adjustment, and optimization of vector control strategies towards elimination in China, and discusses the challenges ahead. The tailored and adapted vector control strategies have played a critical role in China's malaria prevention, control, and elimination, and could provide practical reference for other countries in the global effort to eliminate malaria.

New structural classes of antimalarials

Gajanan K. Rathod et al.

Summary: Malaria, caused by Plasmodium sp., claims millions of lives worldwide. Single drug therapy has led to drug resistance, prompting the need for combination therapy. New structural classes of antimalarial agents have shown promise in overcoming resistance.

Harmicens, Novel Harmine and Ferrocene Hybrids: Design, Synthesis and Biological Activity

Goran Poje et al.

Summary: This study presents the design, synthesis, and evaluation of harmicens, a new class of hybrids with structural diversity. The harmicens showed moderate antiplasmodial activity against malaria and significant and selective antiproliferative activity against cancer cell lines. Cell localization and cycle analysis revealed different mechanisms of action.

Synthesis and Biological Evaluation of Harmirins, Novel Harmine-Coumarin Hybrids as Potential Anticancer Agents

Kristina Pavic et al.

Summary: Novel compounds harmirins, comprising harmine and coumarin scaffolds, were designed, synthesized, and evaluated for their antiproliferative activity against human cancer cell lines. The most potent activities were observed against MCF-7 and HCT116 cell lines, with harmirin 12b showing cytoplasmic localization and inducing G1 arrest. These findings suggest harmirin 12b as a potential novel anticancer agent worth further evaluation.

Pharmacotherapy for artemisinin-resistant malaria

Erik Koehne et al.

Summary: Malaria, the most devastating parasitic disease, is currently treated with artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs). Some ACTs are failing to cure malaria patients due to resistance in Southeast Asia, raising concerns about resistant Plasmodium falciparum emerging in other regions. Alternative treatments to ACTs are needed, and the development of new antimalarial drug classes should be accelerated to safeguard against parasite resistance.
