Essential Oils and Their Major Components: An Updated Review on Antimicrobial Activities, Mechanism of Action and Their Potential Application in the Food Industry

Manasweeta Angane et al.

Summary: Essential oils (EOs) can be considered as a natural food-grade preservative alternative, as they are Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) and have shown potential to inhibit the proliferation of food-borne pathogens. However, their antibacterial activity differs between Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, and their application at a commercial scale is limited due to flavor and odor concerns. Further research is needed to develop strategies for industrial-scale application.

Role of Oxidative Stress in Diabetic Cardiomyopathy

Bart De Geest et al.

Summary: Type 2 diabetes is a redox disease characterized by oxidative stress and chronic inflammation. The cardiac manifestations of the disease, known as diabetic cardiomyopathy, are primarily caused by mitochondrial overproduction of reactive oxygen species. These species are produced due to intracellular hyperglycemia, increased fatty oxidation, and lipotoxicity in cardiomyocytes. The resulting oxidative distress affects various pathways, leading to cell dysfunction and injury. Animal studies have shown that increasing the expression of antioxidant enzymes can attenuate myocardial pathology and improve cardiac function.

Vasorelaxant Mechanism of Herbal Extracts from Mentha suaveolens, Conyza canadensis, Teucrium polium and Salvia verbenaca in the Aorta of Wistar Rats

Jamila El-Akhal et al.

Summary: This study aimed to characterize the composition and vasoreactivity of extracts from Mentha suaveolens, Conyza canadensis, Teucrium polium and Salvia verbenaca. The findings suggest that the vasorelaxant effects of Mentha suaveolens and Salvia verbenaca are mediated by muscarinic receptors and nitric oxide or the cyclooxygenase pathway, respectively. The vasorelaxant effects of Conyza canadensis and Teucrium polium, on the other hand, do not involve these mechanisms. These findings support the traditional use of herbal teas from these plants as anti-hypertensive remedies.
