Pulmonary nodule detection based on 3D feature pyramid network with incorporated squeeze-and-excitation-attention mechanism

Mengyi Zhang et al.

Summary: Lung cancer is primarily caused by malignant lung nodules. Early detection and diagnosis of these nodules can improve patient survival rates. In this study, a 3D feature pyramid network for lung nodule detection is proposed, along with the addition of a squeeze-and-excitation attention module to enhance detection performance.

Rebecca L. Siegel et al.

Summary: Each year, the American Cancer Society compiles data on cancer occurrence and outcomes in the United States. The latest data shows that breast and prostate cancer progress has stagnated, while lung cancer has shown improvements in survival rates. Lung cancer incidence for advanced disease has declined while localized-stage rates have increased, resulting in higher survival rates. Mortality patterns align with incidence trends, with lung cancer deaths declining rapidly, breast cancer deaths slowing, and prostate cancer deaths stabilizing.

SCPM-Net: An anchor-free 3D lung nodule detection network using sphere representation and center points matching

Xiangde Luo et al.

Summary: An anchor-free lung nodule detection network (SCPM-Net) is proposed in this study, which automatically predicts the position, radius, and offset of nodules, achieving higher detection accuracy compared to existing anchor-based methods. The method replaces bounding boxes with sphere representation and utilizes center points matching and optimization of training loss for stable and efficient training.

ProCAN: Progressive growing channel attentive non-local network for lung nodule classification

Mundher Al-Shabi et al.

Summary: This study introduces a new ProCAN network for lung nodule classification, which addresses the challenges of nodule classification by adding channel-wise attention capability, applying Curriculum Learning principles, and progressively growing the model as the task gets harder. Experimental results on two public datasets show that the ProCAN model outperforms state-of-the-art methods, achieving a higher AUC and accuracy. Extensive ablation studies were conducted to analyze the contribution and effects of each new component of the proposed method.

MSN-Net: a multi-scale context nested U-Net for liver segmentation

Tongle Fan et al.

Summary: In this paper, a novel U-Net architecture named Multi-Scale Nested U-Net (MSN-Net) is proposed to alleviate semantic gaps and improve segmentation accuracy. By redesigning skip connections with MSCF-block and dense connections, the network can effectively fuse more representative features and outperform state-of-the-art methods. Additionally, a weighted loss function consisting of cross-entropy loss and Dice loss is used to further enhance segmentation performance on the dataset of MICCAI 2017 LiTS Challenge.

Lung Nodule Classification Using Biomarkers, Volumetric Radiomics, and 3D CNNs

Kushal Mehta et al.

Summary: The study introduces a hybrid algorithm that combines imaging biomarkers and CT scan image classification for estimating lung nodule malignancy, using 3D CNN and Random Forest for feature combination. Various feature combinations are compared to classify malignancy levels, with the incorporation of semi-supervised learning showing potential for improving accuracy. Unexpectedly, the model using only image biomarkers is found to be more accurate than those combining biomarkers with other features, highlighting the influence of cognitive bias in the dataset.

DNA methylation of PTGER4 in peripheral blood plasma helps to distinguish between lung cancer, benign pulmonary nodules and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients

Lea M. Schotten et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the predictive ability of DNA hypermethylation of SHOX2 and PTGER4 in plasma to discriminate between lung cancer, benign lesions, and COPD patients. The results showed that PTGER4 DNA hypermethylation was significantly more frequent in lung cancer patients compared to controls, which may serve as a biomarker to support clinical decision-making. Further exploration in prospective studies is needed.
