Carbon dioxide removal potential from decentralised bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) and the relevance of operational choices

Alberto Almena et al.

Summary: Bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) technology is expected to support net-zero targets by providing low carbon energy and removing carbon dioxide. This research demonstrates the flexibility, scalability, and immediate application of BECCS through modeling. It quantifies the carbon dioxide removal potential of different BECCS pathways and finds that BECCS could achieve 23% of the UK's minimum removal target. Policy frameworks can shape the energy and removal performance of BECCS systems, but trade-offs between biomass use, energy performance, and removal effectiveness need to be considered. A combination of different BECCS pathways and decentralized deployment will be necessary to reach net-zero targets.

Summary: This paper provides a comprehensive review and comparison of various negative emissions technologies (NETs) in terms of their life cycle assessment (LCA) studies. The results show that these technologies can achieve net negative greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, but there are significant variations in GHG removal potentials among different studies and technologies. Additionally, the deployment of these technologies may lead to other environmental impacts, particularly for non-bio NETs which rely on fossil fuels and result in higher fossil depletion, acidification, and human toxicity. However, these impacts can be mitigated by using renewable energy sources to meet the energy demand of NETs.

The economics of bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) deployment in a 1.5 °C or 2 °C world

Mathilde Fajardy et al.

Summary: The study focuses on quantifying the potential scale of BECCS and its impact on the economy, finding that its deployment is mainly driven by revenues from carbon dioxide permits. The global economic costs and carbon prices needed to meet stabilization targets are substantially lower with the technology available, and BECCS acts as a true backstop technology at carbon prices around $240 per tonne of carbon dioxide. While concerns remain about the constraints on BECCS deployment due to environmental and/or political reasons, the study suggests that large-scale deployment of BECCS is not detrimental to agricultural commodity prices and could help reduce the costs of achieving emission reduction targets.
