Lignin-enzyme interaction: A roadblock for efficient enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocellulosics

Caoxing Huang et al.

Summary: Efficiently producing second-generation biofuels from biomass remains a long-term challenge due to biomass recalcitrance. Lignin significantly contributes to biomass recalcitrance by physically limiting enzyme access to carbohydrates. Research is focused on mitigating the negative effects of lignin on enzyme performance.

Recent advances in understanding the effects of lignin structural characteristics on enzymatic hydrolysis

Yufeng Yuan et al.

Summary: Enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocellulose for bioethanol production has great potential, but the presence of lignin inhibits the process. Pretreatment methods can remove lignin and improve enzymatic digestibility. Researchers are focusing on exploring the relationship between lignin structure and lignin-enzyme interactions to enhance saccharification efficiency.

Enhanced Protocatechuic Acid Production From Glucose Using Pseudomonas putida 3-Dehydroshikimate Dehydratase Expressed in a Phenylalanine-Overproducing Mutant of Escherichia coli

Oliver Englund Orn et al.

Summary: The study found that the engineered E. coli strain produced a higher yield of PCA in the shikimate pathway compared to the unmodified strain, with the highest yield of 18 mol% per mol glucose and concentration of 4.2 g/L obtained at a productivity of 0.079 g/L/h. However, acetate was formed as a major side-product during cultivation, indicating feedback inhibition of enzymes affecting PCA formation. Indirect measurement of proton motive force by flow cytometry revealed no membrane damage of the cells by PCA.

Genetic diversity among wild and cultivated germplasm of the perennial pasture grass Phalaris aquatica, using DArTseq SNP marker analysis

Washington J. Gapare et al.

Summary: Phalaris aquatica L. is a cool-season perennial grass used mainly for livestock agriculture in temperate areas. Genetic diversity analysis using molecular markers revealed similarities between wild and cultivated germplasm, with structure analysis indicating distinct subpopulations based on country of origin. The population structure, with most genetic variation occurring within subpopulations, should be considered for future breeding programs and genomic selection in P. aquatica.
