Startup performance and microbial communities of a decentralized anaerobic digestion of food waste

Yong Wei Tiong et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of using a pilot-scale anaerobic digester to treat food waste generated from a hawker centre in an urban area of Singapore. The results showed that the decentralized system had an average specific methane yield of 0.55 +/- 0.04 m3CH4/kgVS, with methane concentrations of 56.6 +/- 2.3%. The energy assessment revealed an average consumption rate of 2.05 +/- 0.57 m3/kW h for power generation. Additionally, the study identified the microbial communities present in the digester during the startup phase, providing new insights into decentralized anaerobic digestion of food waste.

Effects of digestate-encapsulated biochar on plant growth, soil microbiome and nitrogen leaching

Miao Yan et al.

Summary: The increasing food waste and excessive use of mineral fertilizers have had harmful effects on soil, water, and air quality. To address this issue, the study investigated the effects of digestate-encapsulated biochar on plant growth, soil characteristics, nutrient leaching, and soil microbiome. The results showed that digestate-encapsulated biochar had positive effects on plants and was the most effective in increasing chlorophyll content, fresh weight, leaf area, and blossom frequency. In terms of soil characteristics and nutrient retention, digestate-encapsulated biochar had the least nutrient leaching compared to other fertilizers and soil additives. Additionally, it improved the soil immune system and promoted the nitrification process while inhibiting denitrification. This study provides valuable insights into the use of digestate-encapsulated biochar as a sustainable fertilizer or soil additive, as well as the management of food waste digestate.

Anaerobic digestate as a low-cost nutrient source for sustainable microalgae cultivation: A way forward through waste valorization approach

Chi Cheng Chong et al.

Summary: Microalgae are considered high potential feedstocks for liquid fuels to meet the increasing global energy demand, but the high costs of nutrients can hinder commercialization. Using organic-rich anaerobic digestate as a low-cost nutrient source can improve economic viability and sustainability of microalgae production, while also reducing waste and reutilizing organic fractions. Proposed solutions such as digestate dilution, microalgae strain selection, and additional organics can address challenges related to nutrient availability and toxicity, providing future directions for research in cultivating microalgae.

Closing the circle for urban food waste anaerobic digestion: The use of digestate and biochar on plant growth in potting soil

Bede S. Mickan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the use of digestate as a nutrient source and its interactions with biochar when applied to potting mix targeted for localised urban use. The results showed that plant biomass and shoot N concentration increased with digestate addition in a typical nutrient dose-response curve. The application of biochar decreased soil mineral N content and altered the structure of the rhizosphere bacterial community. These findings contribute to optimizing the process of converting urban waste into organic fertilizers, promoting environmental protection and plant growth.

High throughput analysis of leaf chlorophyll content in sorghum using RGB, hyperspectral, and fluorescence imaging and sensor fusion

Huichun Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the estimation of chlorophyll content in sorghum plants using RGB, hyperspectral, and fluorescence imaging modules. The results showed that features extracted from these images, including color features, spectral indices, and fluorescence intensity, could predict chlorophyll content. By combining these features and using the PLSR model, accurate prediction of chlorophyll content in sorghum was achieved. In addition, the inclusion of specific leaf weight (SLW) improved the predictive accuracy.

Does the Use of an Intercropping Mixture Really Improve the Biology of Monocultural Soils?-A Search for Bacterial Indicators of Sensitivity and Resistance to Long-Term Maize Monoculture

Agnieszka Wolinska et al.

Summary: The choice of appropriate agricultural practices has a significant impact on soil quality, crop productivity, and soil microbial community. This study compared the effects of maize monoculture and intercropping on soil properties and bacterial diversity. The results showed that intercropping had a positive effect on soil features and increased the richness and diversity of soil bacteria at the taxonomic level of genera.

Leaf Counting: Fusing Network Components for Improved Accuracy

Guy Farjon et al.

Summary: This study proposes two novel deep learning approaches for visual leaf counting in potted plants, one for direct regression and the other for detection, which outperform previous challenge winners on the Leaf Counting Challenge (LCC) dataset and a new dataset of banana leaves, placing the study as the state of the art in leaf counting. The detection with regression method is preferred for larger datasets with center-dot annotation availability, achieving a 0.94 average precision for leaf center localization.

The Effectiveness of Digestate Use for Fertilization in an Agricultural Cropping System

Modupe Olufemi Doyeni et al.

Summary: The study found that after three years of application in the agricultural system, digestate fertilization increased the nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium content in the soil, with yields higher than synthetic nitrogen fertilizer. There was a strong correlation between nitrogen use efficiency and yield in the digestate treatments, showing potential for short to mid-term use compared to synthetic nitrogen fertilizer.

Improving the Retrieval of Forest Canopy Chlorophyll Content From MERIS Dataset by Introducing the Vegetation Clumping Index

Qi Sun et al.

Summary: The accurate retrieval of canopy chlorophyll content is crucial for monitoring forest productivity and environmental stress. This study introduced the concept of effective CCC and an integrated CI approach for retrieving forest CCC, leading to improved accuracy using empirical regression and random forest regression models. Including CI in the retrieval process, particularly with the random forest approach, has potential for satellite-based forest CCC mapping at regional and global scales.
