Co-circularity of spent coffee grounds and polyethylene via co-pyrolysis: Characteristics, kinetics, and products

Jiawei Fu et al.

Summary: Co-pyrolysis of spent coffee grounds and polyethylene can reduce waste streams and pollution, while valorizing energy and by-products. The co-pyrolysis performance is influenced by temperature and blend ratio. The study revealed that co-pyrolysis consists of two stages, the degradation of spent coffee grounds followed by the depolymerization of polyethylene and lignin. The products of co-pyrolysis include a variety of oxygen-containing compounds, and CP73 showed the highest yields of hydrocarbons and alcohols, beneficial for further utilization.

Competitive adsorption of anionic and cationic molecules on three activated carbons derived from agroindustrial waste

Rodrigo J. Martinez et al.

Summary: This study examined the feasibility of using sugarcane bagasse, spent coffee-grounds, and orange peel activated carbons for the removal of methyl orange and methylene blue. The results showed that these three carbon materials can adsorb both dyes simultaneously and exhibit different adsorption capacities under different pH and initial concentrations. This is important for the treatment of wastewater containing mixed pollutants.

Torrefaction, temperature, and heating rate dependencies of pyrolysis of coffee grounds: Its performances, bio-oils, and emissions

Jiawei Fu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that torrefaction pretreatment can improve the efficiency of coffee grounds pyrolysis, decrease activation energy, and promote the generation of C=C. The optimal conditions are pyrolysis temperature > 600 degrees C and torrefaction temperature <= 270 degrees C. Different torrefaction temperatures have an impact on the composition ratio of bio-oils, with 200 and 250 degrees C potentially being more suitable for the torrefaction of coffee grounds.

Adsorption properties of seaweed-based biochar with the greenhouse gases (CO2, CH4, N2O) through density functional theory (DFT)

Xuping Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, the interaction between biochar and greenhouse gases (GHG) was examined using different models of seaweed-based biochar. The results showed that biochar with nitrogen and oxygen doping exhibited better adsorption performance and sensitivity to CO2 and N2O. A quantitative conformational relationship was constructed to screen GHG adsorbents based on the representative electronic properties of biochar model surfaces. This research provides valuable insights into the GHG adsorption mechanism at a molecular level and can aid in the design of more efficient materials for environmental remediation.
