Glycocalix[4]arenes and their affinity to a library of galectins: the linker matters

Dorota Konvalinkova et al.

Summary: This study reports the synthesis of potential galectin ligands based on the calix[4]arene core and investigates the influence of linkers and core structure on their affinity. Competitive assays using ELISA and biolayer interferometry demonstrate significant differences in affinity based on linker length and the position of the triazole unit. Atomic force microscopy detects the formation of supramolecular clusters.

On the edge between organic solvent nanofiltration and ultrafiltration: Characterization of regenerated cellulose membrane with aspect on dendrimer purification and recycling

Alena Krupkova et al.

Summary: The performance of commercial cellulose membranes with pore size on the border between ultra-and nano-filtration in selected organic solvents was studied. The rejection of small solutes and applicability for dendrimer purification were the main focuses of this study. The results showed that solute molar volume and polarity type, expressed by Hansen solubility parameters, were crucial factors affecting rejection, and the spatial arrangement became important with increasing size of solute molecule. The solvent composition also influenced the membrane structure, resulting in a decrease of membrane molecular weight cutoff.

Carbosilane Glycodendrimers for Anticancer Drug Delivery: Synthetic Route, Characterization, and Biological Effect of Glycodendrimer-Doxorubicin Complexes

Monika Mullerova et al.

Summary: This study presents a stable glycodendrimer (glyco-DDM) series with excellent biocompatibility and potential applications in drug delivery, particularly showing promising results in encapsulating anticancer agents. The glyco-DDM/DOX complexes exhibit gradual and pH-dependent release profiles, preferential internalization in cancer cells, and promising cytotoxic effects on cancer cell lines. The results suggest that novel glycoDDMs and their drug complexes hold great promise in drug delivery and related applications.

Therapeutic potential of targeting galectins-A biomaterials-focused perspective

Sergio Martin-Saldana et al.

Summary: Galectins, a family of glycan-binding proteins, play a key role in immune cell homeostasis and modulation. Some members of the galectin family are crucial in the resolution of inflammation, while others perpetuate the immune response in a pathological context. They have the potential to be targeted for new therapies, and engineered biomaterials show promise in improving the therapeutic performance of galectin-targeted strategies.

Expression, Regulation, and Functions of the Galectin-16 Gene in Human Cells and Tissues

Jennifer D. Kaminker et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the unique properties, regulation, and expression of galectin-16 gene (LGALS16) in human cells and tissues, focusing on its expression and role in placental cell lines in the context of trophoblastic differentiation. Through bioinformatics analysis, it is found that LGALS16 is detected in diverse human cells/tissues and shows altered expression associated with cancer, diabetes, and brain diseases. Molecular mechanisms of the transcriptional and post-transcriptional regulation of LGALS16 are also explored based on available bioinformatics resources.

Immunoprotective neo-glycoproteins: Chemoenzymatic synthesis of multivalent glycomimetics for inhibition of cancer-related galectin-3

Viktoria Heine et al.

Summary: Galectin-3 plays a crucial role in cancerogenesis, and targeting it with artificial glycomimetics has shown a strong inhibitory effect on cancer cells. The synthesized neo-glycoproteins exhibit high selectivity, non-toxicity, and efficiency in targeting exogenous galectin-3, offering potential for immunomodulatory treatment of galectin-3-overexpressing cancers.
