Hybrid State Estimation-A Contribution Towards Reliability Enhancement of Artificial Neural Network Estimators

Philipp M. Sieberg et al.

Summary: A novel hybrid estimation method is proposed to enhance the reliability of artificial neural networks by combining a simple model based on physical knowledge with the neural network model. Confidence level is used to determine the trustworthiness of each model and adjust the covariances of the unscented Kalman filter, thereby improving the estimation reliability and quality.

On the convergence of the unscented Kalman filter

Assia Daid et al.

Summary: This paper presents a convergence analysis of the modified unscented Kalman filter (UKF) as an observer for a class of nonlinear deterministic continuous time systems, comparing it with the extended Kalman filter (EKF) and highlighting the differences in convergence behavior. The study shows that the UKF is not an exponentially converging observer like the EKF, and proposes the unscented Kalman observer as a better candidate for observation. This work serves as a first step towards proving the global convergence of the high-gain version of the UKF observer.

Mesh Based Analysis of Low Fractal Dimension Reinforcement Learning Policies

Sean Gillen et al.

Summary: In this research, the reachable state spaces of continuous and hybrid systems were approximated as a discrete set of states using meshing, and were synthesized into a Markov chain for analysis of locomotion policies obtained by reinforcement learning. A modified reward function utilizing fractal dimension was introduced for on-policy reinforcement learning algorithms to encourage more compactly represented trajectories. The combination of these methods showed that policies trained with the modified reward produced smaller reachable meshes, indicating the transfer of desirable compact state space qualities to settings with external disturbances. The results suggest that previous work using mesh based tools to analyze RL policies could be extended to higher dimensional systems or higher resolution meshes.

UKF-Based Sensor Fusion Method for Position Estimation of a 2-DOF Rope Driven Robot

Myeongjin Choi et al.

Summary: The study introduced a new method based on the unscented Kalman filter for position estimation of the Dual Ascender Robot (DAR), improving performance compared to the previously used method. The method overcomes errors caused by rope slip in the ascender, leading to reduced errors in accuracy and repeatability by approximately 2-3 times as confirmed through testing.
