Therapeutic Oral Application of Carvacrol Alleviates Acute Campylobacteriosis in Mice Harboring a Human Gut Microbiota

Minnja S. S. Foote et al.

Summary: Human Campylobacter jejuni infections are increasing globally and alternative intervention measures are needed. This study investigated the therapeutic effects of carvacrol, a phenolic compound with antimicrobial and immune-modulatory properties, in mice with acute campylobacteriosis. Treatment with carvacrol reduced pathogen loads in the small intestines, alleviated symptoms and histopathological changes in the colon, and decreased immune cell numbers. Carvacrol also dampened pro-inflammatory mediator secretion and induced shifts in the fecal microbiota composition. Overall, these findings suggest that carvacrol application could be a promising option to alleviate campylobacteriosis in infected vertebrate hosts.

Effectiveness and mechanisms of essential oils for biofilm control on food-contact surfaces: An updated review

Chiara Rossi et al.

Summary: Microbial biofilms pose a constant contamination threat in the food industry and a risk to human health. Essential oils (EOs), with their unique compound mixtures, have shown promise as natural alternatives for preventing biofilm formation on food-contact surfaces. This review highlights the anti-biofilm properties of EOs in inhibiting, removing, and preventing the dispersion of bacterial biofilms on these surfaces. The review also discusses the relationship between the effectiveness of EOs and their composition, concentration, the bacteria involved, and the surfaces they are applied to. The findings indicate that EOs have a high capability to control biofilms by regulating genes and proteins associated with motility, Quorum Sensing, and exopolysaccharides (EPS) matrix. Incorporating EOs into nanosized delivery systems, formulating blends, and combining EOs with other strategies can enhance their anti-biofilm activity.

Effective removal of biofilm formation in Acinetobacter baumannii using chitosan nanoparticles loaded plant essential oils

Rajivgandhi Govindan et al.

Summary: The present study investigated the anti-biofilm properties of chitosan loaded essential oils against biofilm forming Acinetobacter baumannii. The results demonstrated that chitosan loaded essential oils at a concentration of 150 mg/mL efficiently inhibited the formation of biofilm and reduced the virulence of biofilm metabolic cells. The study also showed that chitosan loaded essential oils inactivated the production of biofilm metabolites and caused extensive damage to the interior and exterior of the bacterial cells. Therefore, this study highlights the significance of chitosan loaded essential oils in effectively eradicating biofilm formation by Acinetobacter baumannii.
