Prevalence and risk factors of Campylobacter infection in goats in southern provinces of Thailand

Sakaoporn Prachantasena et al.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence of Campylobacter spp. in goats reared in southern Thailand and identified the risk factors associated with Campylobacter infection. The results showed that the prevalence of Campylobacter in goats was 11.33%, with Campylobacter lanienae being the dominant species. The use of antibiotics and deworming were found to be associated with Campylobacter infections in goats.

Campylobacter Gastroenteritis Among Under-Five Children in Southwest Ethiopia

Yared Nigusu et al.

Summary: This study found a prevalence rate of 8.9% for Campylobacter infection among under-five children in Ethiopia. Factors associated with Campylobacter infection included absence of caretakers' handwashing, direct contact with domestic animals, and consumption of raw dairy products. Some Campylobacter strains showed resistance to antibiotics.

Risk factors for sporadic campylobacteriosis: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Philippe Fravalo et al.

Summary: Campylobacter spp. is a significant causative agent of diarrheal illness globally, with foodborne transmission being a major route but other exposures also playing a role. A meta-analysis of case-control studies identified international travel, recent use of gastric antacids, occupational exposure to animals, and consuming raw or undercooked eggs, poultry, beef, and dairy as main risk factors for campylobacteriosis in mixed populations. In children, drinking untreated water, exposure to recreational water, farm/rural environments, contact with farm animals, person-to-person transmission, and consuming raw milk were highlighted as significant risk factors.

Prevalence and antimicrobial susceptibility of Campylobacter isolated from retail chickens in Thailand

Piyada Wangroongsarb et al.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence and antimicrobial resistance patterns of Campylobacter spp. on chicken samples purchased from 50 local wet markets and supermarkets in central Thailand. High contamination rates and alarming levels of antimicrobial resistance were found in Campylobacter spp. isolated from retail chicken samples in Thailand, highlighting the necessity of interventions to reduce its prevalence in the country.

Small-scale commercial chicken production: A risky business for farmers in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam

Dinh Bao Truong et al.

Summary: Small-scale farming of meat chicken flocks using local native breeds is important for the economy in rural areas of Vietnam and LMICs, but there is limited knowledge on the profitability and sustainability of these systems. Feed is the largest financial cost for these farms, and a significant portion of farms decide to stop raising chickens after one cycle due to higher costs and mortality rates. Supporting farmers with advisory services and training in the early stages can help improve profitability and reduce the risk of antimicrobial resistance and infectious disease emergence.

Natural Horizontal Gene Transfer of Antimicrobial Resistance Genes in Campylobacter spp. From Turkeys and Swine

Vanina Guernier-Cambert et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the potential transfer of antimicrobial resistance genes between Campylobacter strains of different species and animal hosts, both in vitro and in vivo. Horizontal gene transfer events were observed in vitro, leading to the acquisition of resistance to beta-lactams, aminoglycosides, and tetracycline, while a newly emerged dual-resistant strain was recovered in vivo. Whole genome sequencing characterized the events involved in the horizontal spread of resistance genes between Campylobacter following co-culture and dual inoculation experiments.

Resistance to Antibiotics in Thermophilic Campylobacters

Ema Aleksic et al.

Summary: Campylobacter jejuni is a common cause of bacterial enterocolitis globally, with complex mechanisms of antibiotic resistance including enzymatic destruction and alteration of metabolic pathways. Antibiotic resistance has become an important public health issue in developed and developing countries due to the emergence of resistant strains.

High-throughput sequencing reveals genetic determinants associated with antibiotic resistance in Campylobacter spp. from farm-to-fork

Shaimaa F. Mouftah et al.

Summary: Campylobacter species exhibit high levels of resistance to quinolones and macrolides, with multi-drug resistance most commonly found in C. coli isolates. Resistance patterns are similar between isolates from broiler carcasses and clinical samples, indicating the role of animal-derived food in transmitting resistance to humans. Genetic mutations, especially in genes like gyrA and tet(O), play a significant role in conferring resistance to antimicrobials. Dominant clones, such as sub-lineages of CC828 and CC21, are responsible for the dissemination of resistance genes across different niches.
