On sustainability and digital fabrication with concrete

Robert J. Flatt et al.

Summary: Digital concrete is seen as a more sustainable construction option, but often has higher carbon footprints and reduced durability compared to standard concrete. Shape efficiency is the unique environmental benefit it brings, with efforts needed to align it more closely with standard concrete by incorporating large aggregates and improving durability characterization. Overdesigned 3D printed concretes can benefit from aluminum accelerators in a 2K system to separate buildability from structural strength and lower carbon footprints in mix design.

Investigation of interlayer adhesion of 3D printable cementitious material from the aspect of printing process

Yiwei Weng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of parameters on interlayer bond strength in 3DCP from different phases, including mixing, printing, and post-processing phases. The results showed that increasing superplasticizer dosage in the mixing phase, increasing pumping speed in the printing phase, and proper curing in the post-processing phase can improve interlayer bond strength. While surface moisture content (SMC) has a critical impact, material thixotropic index (Ithix) probably has a stronger influence on interlayer bond strength.

Fibre-reinforced lightweight engineered cementitious composites for 3D concrete printing

Junbo Sun et al.

Summary: A new fiber-reinforced high-performance lightweight engineered cementitious composite (LWECC) was proposed and thoroughly investigated for its fresh properties, compressive strength, and flexural strength, then calibrated through a printability assessment. The addition of hollow glass microspheres (HGMs) significantly improved the lightweight property of the material but inevitably negated mechanical properties. Superior toughness was observed when the printed filament was perpendicular to the loading direction, resulting in a 63% increase in compressive strength and a 40% increase in flexural strength.
