Autistic Adults' Experiences of Diagnosis Disclosure

Summary: This study examined the experiences of autistic adults in disclosing their diagnosis in various contexts. The findings showed that while most participants disclosed to friends, a significant number of participants studying and/or working had not disclosed to their education provider/employer. The study highlights the importance of improving autism understanding and reducing stigma in educational and employment settings.

Time trends in autism diagnosis over 20 years: a UK population-based cohort study

The Integrated Self-Categorization Model of Autism

Summary: This article formally presents the Integrated Self-Categorization model of Autism (ISCA), which combines the cognitive-perceptual and social-communication features of autism under one explanatory framework. The model proposes that the social-communication features related to theory of mind dysfunction stem from cognitive-perceptual features related to enhanced perceptual functioning and weak central coherence, and are linked by dysfunction in the self-categorization process. Precise, testable hypotheses are derived from the assumptions of the model, including novel hypotheses not found in existing autism models. The article provides evidence supporting the model through direct tests of the hypotheses it generates. The implications of the model for understanding autism, improving the lives of autistic people, and future directions are discussed.

Understanding Stigma in Autism: A Narrative Review and Theoretical Model

Summary: The experience of stigma by autistic people is not well studied, despite its negative impact. This literature review presents a theoretical model of autism stigma, based on current research. Autism stigma is influenced by public and professional understanding of autism, as well as interpretation of visible autistic traits. Factors such as contact with autistic individuals, cultural factors, sex and gender, individual differences, and diagnostic disclosure moderate the impact of stigma. Stigma can reduce well-being and lead to camouflaging of autistic traits. Caregivers of autistic people can also experience stigma, which affects their own well-being. Various interventions and approaches to reduce stigma are discussed, including creating autism-friendly spaces, positive media representation, education and training, and promoting neurodiversity.

Age at autism spectrum disorder diagnosis: A systematic review and meta-analysis from 2012 to 2019

Summary: This study conducted a meta-analysis on studies published between 2012 and 2019 to determine the current average age at diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder globally. The findings showed the average age at diagnosis to be 60.48 months, with a lower average age of 43.18 months for children aged 10 or below.
