Design, metallurgy, mechanical properties, and shaping ability of 3 heat-treated reciprocating systems: a multimethod investigation

Emmanuel J. N. L. Silva et al.

Summary: This study aimed to compare 3 reciprocating systems in terms of design, metallurgy, mechanical properties, and shaping ability. The results showed that although there were differences in design, temperature transition phases, and mechanical behavior parameters among the tested instruments, they were similar in terms of shaping ability.

What Meaningful Information Are the Instruments Mechanical Testing Giving Us? A Comprehensive Review

Jorge N. R. Martins et al.

Summary: The mechanical strength and flexibility of instruments are traditionally evaluated through various tests, including cyclic fatigue, torsional, bending, buckling, and microhardness tests. Cyclic fatigue testing, in particular, can provide valuable information on the factors that may affect fatigue strength outcomes. Despite their importance, these tests are associated with limitations such as artificiality, simplicity, inconsistency, and low external validity. Efforts have been made to improve the reliability of the outcomes by incorporating settings that mimic clinical conditions.
