North Atlantic Oscillation-Associated Variation in Cloud Phase and Cloud Radiative Forcing over the Greenland Ice Sheet

Haotian Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the spatial distribution of ice clouds and liquid-bearing clouds over the Greenland ice sheet (GrIS) and their effects on surface radiative forcing. The results show that the spatial and temporal variations in clouds over the GrIS are closely related to the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). Different regions of the GrIS exhibit different responses of clouds to changes in the atmospheric circulation field during the NAO.

The representation of dry-season low-level clouds over Western Equatorial Africa in reanalyses and historical CMIP6 simulations

P. Camberlin et al.

Summary: This study examines the ability of reanalysis products and CMIP6 models to reproduce the climatology of low clouds over Western Equatorial Africa (WEA). The datasets show a reasonable representation of the regional distribution of low clouds, but CMIP6 models tend to underestimate the low cloud fraction, especially over WEA. The underestimation is partly due to an insufficient seasonal sea-surface temperature cooling, which reduces the lower-tropospheric stability.

Extreme Indian Ocean dipole and rainfall variability over Central Africa

Foupouapegnigni Moihamette et al.

Summary: This study examines the influence of extreme Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) events on Central Africa rainfall using both observational and reanalysis datasets. The results show that during extreme positive IOD events, rainfall in Central Africa increases, while during extreme negative IOD events, rainfall decreases. The study also finds that the intensification of the African Easterly Jet and the non-El Nino effect are important factors in driving this rainfall variability.

Mechanisms of Rainfall Biases in Two CORDEX-CORE Regional Climate Models at Rainfall Peaks over Central Equatorial Africa

Alain T. Tamoffo et al.

Summary: Two regional climate models participating in the CORDEX-Coordinated Output for Regional Evaluations project show a dipole-type rainfall bias over central equatorial Africa during March-May and September-November, with stronger moisture availability in the west and weaker in the east. This is due to a weaker Congo basin cell and reduced moisture transport from west to east. As a result, convection in east central equatorial Africa is shallow due to underestimating the moist static energy.

Rainfall in uncoupled and coupled versions of the Met Office Unified Model over Central Africa: Investigation of processes during the September-November rainy season

Thierry N. Taguela et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the complex climate simulation in Central Africa and finds that the models have biases in rainfall, with wet or dry biases, especially in the coupled models. The study identifies several potential causes for these biases, including inaccurate simulation of the Atlantic-Congo zonal overturning circulation, misrepresentation of the African easterly jet components, exaggeration of the width and intensity of the Congo basin cell, and overestimation of moisture advection from both the Atlantic and the Indian Oceans.

Low-level circulation over Central Equatorial Africa as simulated from CMIP5 to CMIP6 models

Thierry N. Taguela et al.

Summary: This study evaluates and compares the simulation of low-level circulation in Central Equatorial Africa using eight climate models from CMIP6 and eight previous models from CMIP5. The results show that while the main characteristics of the simulation are reasonably well depicted, there are some biases. The CMIP5 models generally overestimate the strength of low-level westerlies, while the CMIP6 models show a slight improvement in the simulation of divergent and rotational circulation. The CMIP6 models also exhibit a reduction in the intensity and width of the Congo basin cell, which is associated with the improvement in the simulated low-level westerlies.

Summary: The simulations of atmospheric cloud-radiative effect (ACRE) from 54 Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 6 (CMIP6) models during the historical period of 2000/03-2014/12 are compared and evaluated against the satellite-based Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES) products. High-resolution models generally produce better ACRE simulations, especially in the tropical oceans.

Compensating Errors in Cloud Radiative and Physical Properties over the Southern Ocean in the CMIP6 Climate Models

Lijun Zhao et al.

Summary: The Southern Ocean is affected by underestimated cloudiness and overestimated absorption of solar radiation, leading to biases in climate sensitivity. This study evaluates cloud physical properties in CMIP6 models using satellite observations and finds marked discrepancies in cloud macro- and micro-physical properties. However, compensating errors in the modeled shortwave cloud radiative effect reasonably predict the cloud radiative effect and absorption of solar radiation in CMIP6. More rigorous calibration of cloud physical properties is needed for future climate model development and climate projection.

Characteristics of top-of-atmosphere radiation budget over the Tibetan Plateau and its bias sources in climate models

JianDong Li et al.

Summary: Observations indicate that the Tibetan Plateau has the largest positive radiation budget among land regions in the same latitudes. However, most models underestimate this budget and show substantial differences in absorbed shortwave radiation. The study emphasizes the importance of land surface states and clouds in modeling the climate of the Tibetan Plateau.

Distinct response of near surface air temperature to clouds in North China

Shuyi Jiang et al.

Summary: Using ground site measurements from the China Meteorological Administration, this study investigates the influence of clouds on the daily temperature range in North China. The findings show that clouds weaken the daily maximum temperature and increase the daily minimum temperature, resulting in a decrease in the daily temperature range. The impact of clouds is particularly strong in mountainous regions.

The ERA5's diurnal cycle of low-level clouds over Western Central Africa during June-September: Dynamic and thermodynamic processes

A. Dommo et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes the diurnal cycle of low-level cloud cover and its drivers over Western Central Africa during the cloudiest season. The study found that temperature plays a major role in the daytime variations of cloud cover, while moisture flow from the ocean influences cloud formation in the evening. The formation of clouds is mainly related to horizontal moisture flux, strong convergence in the lower layer, and turbulent upward mixing of moisture.

Process-based assessment of the impact of reduced turbulent mixing on Congo Basin precipitation in the RCA4 Regional Climate Model

Alain T. Tamoffo et al.

Summary: Reducing turbulent mixing improves the representation of rainfall dynamics over the Congo Basin in the RCA4-v4 model compared to RCA4-v1, leading to better simulation of precipitation and climate system dynamics in the region. This enhancement is related to the models' different representations of driving mechanisms and processes, indicating the importance of accurately capturing turbulent mixing effects in climate models for simulating rainfall patterns.

Clouds, radiation, and atmospheric circulation in the present-day climate and under climate change

Aiko Voigt et al.

Summary: The interaction between clouds and radiation plays a significant role in influencing the atmospheric circulation, internal variability, and response to climate change. Factors such as cloud-controlling factors and cloud-radiative effects affect the present-day climate. Models like COOKIE and cloud-locking methods help understand these impacts on the circulation and variability. Differences in shortwave and longwave cloud impacts contribute to model variations in response to global warming.

Stratospheric ozone loss-induced cloud effects lead to less surface ultraviolet radiation over the Siberian Arctic in spring

Summary: Arctic ozone loss may lead to a decrease in surface UV radiation over the Siberian Arctic in spring, while an increase in high clouds allows more UV radiation to reach the surface. The masking effect of high clouds is found to be stronger than that of stratospheric ozone loss over the Siberian Arctic in spring.
