PM2.5-bound biogenic secondary organic aerosol tracers over a regionally representative site in central India: Characteristics and sources

Jayant Nirmalkar et al.

Summary: This study quantified the presence of biogenic secondary organic aerosol (BSOA) in PM2.5 over Bhopal, central India. Isoprene oxidation products were found to have the highest concentration, accounting for 64% of all quantified tracers. The findings suggest that the concentrations of isoprene and monoterpene oxidation products are influenced by photochemical oxidation, while the concentration of sesquiterpene oxidation products is potentially influenced by biomass burning.

Mengying Bao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the seasonal variations, optical properties, and possible sources of Humic-like substances (HULIS) in PM2.5 samples collected in Nanjing over a year. The results showed that HULIS concentrations were highest in winter and lowest in summer, with significant contributions from biomass burning and aqueous phase secondary HULIS formation. The study highlighted the contributions of fossil fuel combustion and anthropogenic precursors to HULIS, on top of biomass burning, in an urban area in China.

Summary: The spatial distribution and optical properties of HULIS and HP-WSOM in winter PM2.5 were investigated in six megacities in China. HULIS-a and HULIS-n were mainly composed of aromatic and aliphatic compounds, while HP-WSOM was dominated by carboxylic acid groups. Additionally, there were strong positive correlations between reactive oxygen species (ROS) of HULIS-a and HULIS-n and MAE365 in certain cities.

Summary: In this study, a rapid method using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry was developed to detect carbohydrates and monoterpene secondary organic aerosol (SOA(M)) tracers in the atmosphere. The study found that levoglucosan is the most abundant carbohydrate in the atmosphere with distinct seasonal variation. The study also determined the sources and contributions of these organic aerosols using models. The findings provide insights into the atmospheric environment and its pollutants.

Li Liu et al.

Summary: This study conducted field measurements in Guangzhou during winter to evaluate the scattering abilities and water absorption characteristics of secondary organic aerosols (SOAs). The results showed that the more oxidized oxygenated organic aerosol (MOOA) was the most efficient light scattering aerosol component and had the strongest water uptake ability. The contributions of MOOA to visibility degradation were significant.

Summary: WSOA in PM2.5 collected during wintertime in a polluted city in Northern China was characterized and found to account for a significant portion of total OA mass, closely correlating with SOA. Positive matrix factorization analysis resolved WS-CCOA, WS-BBOA, and WS-OOA as major components of WSOA, with differing water solubilities and influences from coal combustion and biomass burning.

Hao Sun et al.

Summary: This study investigated the molecular composition, sources, and optical properties of humic-like substances (HULIS) in winter-time PM2.5 in a rural area of North China Plain. Biomass burning, coal combustion, and secondary formation were identified as the main sources of HULIS, while the organic carbon concentrations of HULIS varied between daytime and nighttime but contributed significantly to WSOC. This research provided insights into the composition and characteristics of HULIS in NCP, shedding light on their potential sources and impact on atmospheric optics.

Summary: This study investigated the vertical profiles of dicarboxylic acids and related organic compounds (DCRCs) in PM2.5 at different altitudes near the Canton Tower in Guangzhou, China. The results showed higher concentrations of DCRCs at 488 m above ground level compared to ground level, indicating a higher degree of aerosol aging at higher altitude. The abundance of DCRCs was influenced by air masses from regional areas, oxidation of precursors, and in-cloud processes during different seasons.
