Aerosol Proteinaceous Matter in Coastal Okinawa, Japan: Influenceof Long-Range Transport and Photochemical Degradation

Xiaoying Li et al.

Summary: This research investigated the characteristics, sources, and atmosphericoxidation processes of marine aerosol proteinaceous matter (APM) in the coastal area of Okinawa Island. The concentrations of APM were comparable to those of marine APM, and different sources, including long-range transport from northern China and Mongolia and oceanic areas, contributed to the total proteins and free amino acids (FAAs). The photochemical oxidation processes of high-molecular-weight proteins releasing FAAs were also found to influence the characteristics of APM.

Fungal diversity in a sediment core from climate change impacted Boeckella Lake, Hope Bay, north-eastern Antarctic Peninsula assessed using metabarcoding

Luiz Henrique Rosa et al.

Summary: This study investigated the fungal DNA present in a lake sediment core from Trinity Peninsula, Hope Bay, north-eastern Antarctic Peninsula using high-throughput sequencing. The results showed the presence of diverse fungi, including unknown fungi and cold-adapted fungi, in the lake. This study is important for understanding the impact of climate change on Antarctic microbial diversity.

Fungal Aerosol Diversity Over the Northern South China Sea: The Influence of Land and Ocean

Yuting Shi et al.

Summary: Fungal aerosols in the atmosphere have a significant impact on cloud formation, global climate change, and human health. A study in the northern South China Sea found that the abundance and composition of fungal aerosols were influenced by terrestrial sources, with the near-coast samples showing higher abundances of certain fungal genera. The study highlights the importance of understanding the characteristics and influencing factors of fungal aerosols over the oceanic area.

Vertical characterisation of phylogenetic divergence of microbial community structures, interaction, and sustainability in estuary and marine ecosystems

Okugbe Ebiotubo Ohore et al.

Summary: Changes in aquatic environmental conditions can affect microbial community assemblages and genome repertoire. Increasing water depth leads to higher bacterial and eukaryotic diversity and composition. Different microbes show differential nestedness at different water depths. The bottom depth is the most ecologically stable area with more profound ecosystem services.

Effect of Indian monsoon on the glacial airborne bacteria over the Tibetan Plateau

Jing Qi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of the Indian monsoon on the diversity, taxonomic composition, and community structure of airborne bacteria over glaciers in the Tibetan Plateau. The results showed that the Indian monsoon increased the airborne bacterial diversity and influenced the abundance of specific bacterial phyla. Additionally, the Indian monsoon altered the community structure of airborne bacteria and increased the presence of potential pathogens.

Microbiome community and complexity indicate environmental gradient acclimatisation and potential microbial interaction of endemic coral holobionts in the South China Sea

Biao Chen et al.

Summary: Our study found that shifts in Symbiodiniaceae and bacterial communities of Pocillopora verrucosa and Turbinaria peltata in the South China Sea were associated with changes in latitude and climate zones. Bacteria and Symbiodiniaceae demonstrated different flexibility in different environmental regimes, which correlated with holobiont acclimatisation. The core microbiome analysis indicated potential human activity in coral habitats and highlighted the impact of Symbiodiniaceae-bacterial interactions on holobiont health and acclimatisation during climate change.

Summary: This study investigated the bacterial community structure of Liaohe Estuary using SMRT, revealing differences in bacterial communities based on season, lifestyle, and habitat. Factors influencing the bacterial community were identified, along with indicative taxa related to potential contamination. The results contribute to understanding the bacterial community and anthropogenic impacts in the Liaohe Estuary.

Spatial separation of microbial communities reflects gradients of salinity and temperature in offshore sediments from Shenzhen, south China

Rui Zhang et al.

Summary: Research conducted in Shenzhen, China, revealed significant differences in microbial diversity among the offshore sediment samples from 20 coastal areas. The dominant families in the microbial community varied between western and eastern sediment sites. Environmental factors such as salinity, pH, and temperature were found to play a crucial role in shaping the microbial community structure.

Seasonal fluctuations in symbiotic bacteria and their role in environmental adaptation of the scleractinian coral Acropora pruinosa in high-latitude coral reef area of the South China Sea

Xiaopeng Yu et al.

Summary: The symbiotic bacterial communities in high-latitude corals exhibit significant seasonal variations, with rapid restructuring of community structures. Sea surface temperature is identified as the major contributor to microbial community structure variation. The high diversity and abundance of symbiotic bacteria under high temperatures help corals maintain physiological functions.

Distribution characteristics of bioaerosols inside pig houses and the respiratory tract of pigs

Qian Tang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the distribution characteristics of bioaerosols in a pig house and the respiratory tract of pigs, finding higher concentrations of airborne culturable bacteria inside the pig house compared to outside, with no significant difference observed for culturable fungi and Escherichia coli. The 16S rRNA sequencing results showed high similarity between bacterial aerosols and bacteria in the piglets' respiratory tract, and identified potential pathogenic bacterial genera in both aerosols and the respiratory tract.

Seasonal changes dominate long-term variability of the urban air microbiome across space and time

Andres Nunez et al.

Summary: Compared to soil or aquatic ecosystems, the atmosphere remains relatively unexplored in terms of microbial diversity. This study surveyed microbes in the near surface atmosphere of a highly populated area around Madrid, finding a stable ecosystem with a core of abundant bacterial genera across space and time, modulated by climatic variations. The microbial communities exhibited clear seasonal patterns driven by environmental factors, contributing to our understanding of long-term changes in human exposure in highly populated urban areas.
