Commuters health risk associated with particulate matter exposures in subway system-Globally

Debananda Roy et al.

Summary: The effects of air pollution within subway systems on public health have been overlooked. This study found significant non-cancer and cancer risks in subway systems worldwide, with Asian subway systems being recognized as high cancer risk zones. Strengthening regulation and applying air purification techniques are suggested to manage the risks in subway systems.

Spatio-temporal variability of airborne particulate matter in the Sao Paulo subway

Admir Creso Targino et al.

Summary: Concentrations of air pollutants, particularly particulate matter, are found to be higher in subway systems, posing health risks to commuters and staff. Measurements in Sao Paulo subway system showed that below-grade stations had significantly higher concentrations compared to above-grade stations, with lack of natural ventilation exacerbating the levels. Particle concentrations were larger at station platforms than on-board trains, with pollutant discharge by the piston wind contributing to the difference.

Composition and exposure characteristics of PM2.5 on subway platforms and estimates of exposure reduction by protective masks

Wenjing Ji et al.

Summary: This study investigated the exposure to metallic constituents of fine particulate matter in subway stations in Nanjing, China. The results showed that subway workers were exposed to higher levels of airborne metals compared to commuters, but wearing N95 respirators or masks could significantly reduce this exposure.

Particle and metal exposure in Parisian subway: Relationship between exposure biomarkers in air, exhaled breath condensate, and urine

I. Guseva Canu et al.

Summary: Subway particulate toxicity differs between in vitro and in vivo studies, calling for further research on outcomes from chronic exposures and exposure biomarkers. Monitoring of subway workers revealed varied daily temporal variation patterns in particle and metal exposures in PM, urine, and EBC matrices, highlighting the need for toxicological research to explore factors influencing health effects of low chronic exposures to subway particulates. Further studies should focus on understanding the health impacts of long-term exposure to subway particulates in larger population cohorts.

Summary: A study conducted in an underground mine in Finland in 2017 aimed to investigate concentrations and size distributions of LDSA using an electrical low-pressure impactor and diffusion-charging based sensors. Despite challenging environmental conditions for sensors, correlations with the ELPI+ were decent.

Recent progress in research on PM2.5 in subways

Li Chang et al.

Summary: PM2.5 concentrations in subways are greatly influenced by various factors, but the relative impact of each factor is still uncertain. The sources of subway PM2.5, both internal and external, are not clearly defined. Current control strategies are often inefficient, and further research on the health impacts of subway PM2.5 is needed.
