Mercury emission characteristics and mechanism in the raw mill system of cement clinker production

Guoliang Li et al.

Summary: Cement clinker production is the top emitter of atmospheric mercury in China. The mercury emissions during the mill-off mode account for 35.0%-71.7% of the emissions during the entire cycle, despite the fact that this period only lasts for 5%-17%. Therefore, monitoring and controlling mercury in cement clinker production is crucial.

Atmospheric PM2.5 near an Urban-Industrial Complex during Air-pollution Episodes with Various Meteorological Conditions

Sheng-Lun Lin et al.

Summary: This study investigates the issue of atmospheric fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in Southern Taiwan, examining the complex sources, terrain, and meteorology affecting it. The study found that the PM2.5 composition consisted largely of ions, carbonaceous species, and metals. The chemical mass balance (CMB) model indicated that secondary SO42-, traffic emissions, and petrochemical emissions were the dominant contributors to PM2.5. The study also highlighted the impact of sea-land breezes on transporting primary PM2.5 and aerosol precursors. The findings suggest the need to reduce average emissions of PM2.5 and its precursors, and to promptly control primary emissions when high-level PM2.5 is forecasted.

Spatiotemporal distribution and long-range transport of atmospheric speciated mercury at three remote islands in Taiwan Strait and South China Sea

Kuo-Ning Hung et al.

Summary: This study investigated the spatiotemporal distribution and long-range transport of atmospheric speciated mercury at three remote islands in the Taiwan Strait and the South China Sea. Results showed that total gaseous mercury was the dominant species, and speciated mercury in the atmosphere was positively correlated with O3, PM2.5, SO2, and NOx.

Total gaseous mercury (TGM) concentration over Lake Superior and Lake Michigan

Theresa A. Foley et al.

Summary: Mercury-contaminated fish in the Great Lakes basin pose a serious threat to humans and wildlife. Measurements of total gaseous mercury (TGM) over Lake Superior and Lake Michigan show relatively low concentrations compared to other monitoring stations in Canada and the United States. The study also found significant correlations between TGM and other pollutants such as organic carbon, sulfate, nitrate, and ammonium over Lake Michigan.

Impact of a truck Driver's strike on air pollution levels in Sao Paulo

Julio Barboza Chiquetto et al.

Summary: During a truck driver strike in Brazil, primary pollutants CO and NO decreased by 50%, while ozone increased significantly, possibly due to favorable atmospheric conditions and changes in the NOx/VOCs ratio caused by the decrease in NO. These findings help to better understand the impact of vehicular emissions on air quality.

Characterization of PM, PAHs and Gaseous Pollutants Emitted from Sintering Process and Electric Arc Furnace

Tang Wei Chen et al.

Summary: The iron and steel industry is important for economic development, but it also generates a large amount of air pollutants. The study found variations in pollutant concentrations emitted from the sintering process and electric arc furnaces under the influence of air pollution control devices, with higher concentrations of particulate matter and carbon monoxide.

Wei-Syun Huang et al.

Summary: The study adjusted emission inventories and simulated long-range pollution transport events, finding that adjusting emission inventories can effectively reduce pollutant emissions and improve the match between model results and observations. It is recommended to explore other satellite products for tracking LRT events in the future.

Spatial-temporal Variation and Local Source Identification of Air Pollutants in a Semi-urban Settlement in Nigeria Using Low-cost Sensors

Oyediran Kayode Owoade et al.

Summary: A study conducted in a growing, semi-urban settlement in southwest Nigeria deployed low-cost sensors to measure air pollution concentrations and meteorological variables, revealing significant spatial differences in pollutant concentrations and anthropogenic origins of most pollutants. Mitigation strategies need to be established to prevent further deterioration of ambient air quality that negatively impacts public health.

Impact of Nationwide COVID-19 Lockdown on Indian Air Quality in Terms of Aerosols as Observed from the Space

Manoj K. Mishra et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the impact of lockdown measures on aerosols in India and found a decrease in aerosol optical thickness in most regions, especially in the Indo-Gangetic plain, confirming the positive impact of lockdown on air quality. However, some regions in central, northwest, and northeast India showed an increase in aerosols due to smoke from active fires.
