Thermal decomposition of heptafluoropropylene-oxide-dimer acid (GenX)

Maissa A. Adi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the thermal decomposition process of GenX in incinerators and predicts the initiation temperature to be around 700 K. The most favored channel for decomposition involves the simultaneous elimination of HF and CO2, with the production of CF2 at elevated temperatures. Further research on interactions between major fluorine carriers and other constituents in incineration mediums is suggested.

Degradation and mechanism of hexafluoropropylene oxide dimer acid by thermally activated persulfate in aqueous solutions

Xiaoyan Ding et al.

Summary: The study successfully degraded HFPO-DA using the TAP system, but the influence of co-contaminants in the field can be significant. The degradation pathways of HFPO-DA were proposed through an integrated approach of experiment and DFT calculations, with stable intermediates identified by UPLC-Q-TOF-MS. Acute toxicity assessment showed that the degradation of HFPO-DA had no adverse effect on the growth of Escherichia coli.

Widening the Lens on PFASs: Direct Human Exposure to Perfluoroalkyl Acid Precursors (pre-PFAAs)

Carrie A. McDonough et al.

Summary: Assessing the health risks associated with PFASs is a complex problem that requires collaboration among scientists, risk assessors, and regulators. One pressing question is the significance of pre-PFAAs, which degrade to persistent perfluoroalkyl acids, in human exposure and health risk assessment. This article provides an overview of recent progress and recommendations to broaden the understanding of PFAS exposure by considering the pre-PFAA subclass.

Neutral and ionizable per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances in the urban atmosphere: Occurrence, sources and transport

Siquan Wang et al.

Summary: This study simultaneously analyzed neutral and ionizable PFASs in the atmosphere of China, Japan and Malaysia to investigate their occurrence, seasonal variations, sources and transport. The results showed that airborne PFASs had a decreasing gradient from cities with high population density toward less industrialized sites, with higher concentrations in the summer. The study also found that certain PFAS compounds had the same sources and that PFBA was transported to distant cities through atmospheric transport.

A computational drop-in assessment of hydrofluoroethers in Organic Rankine Cycles

Daniel Jovell et al.

Summary: This study evaluates nine low-GWP hydrofluoroethers (HFEs) as alternative working fluids for improving the energy efficiency and service fluid consumption in Organic Rankine Cycles (ORCs) using the soft-SAFT molecular-based equation of state. The results show that HFE-356mmz, HFE-7000, and HFE-7100 have promising potential as replacements with low pressure and flow rates, and lower GWP values.

Mechanism study on CO2 capture by ionic liquids made from TFA blended with MEA and MDEA

Annanurov Shohrat et al.

Summary: Ionic liquids have the potential to enhance the efficiency of CO2 capture, and blending with solvents like MEA and MDEA can significantly improve the absorption capacity. The absorption capacity increases with the amount of MDEA, and the formation of zwitterions contributes to CO2 absorption.

A chemical kinetic model for the decomposition of perfluorinated sulfonic acids

Mohammednoor Altarawneh

Summary: The study investigates the thermal decomposition of perfluorinated sulfonic acids, constructing a detailed kinetic model to illustrate the major chemical reactions involved. Results indicate that major reactions include unimolecular decomposition channels, hydrofluorination, hydrolysis, and fragmentation of the alkyl chain. The model aids in understanding the fate and chemical transformation of PFCs under a pyrolytic environment relevant to waste incineration and fluorine mineralization.

Summary: Quantum chemical calculations were conducted to investigate the gas-phase H-abstraction reactions of CH2FCH2OH with OH radical, with a focus on reaction mechanisms and rate coefficients. The results highlight the significance of the orientation of CH2FCH2OH on its reactivity, while also reporting its atmospheric lifetime and Global Warming Potential, as well as discussing several competing reaction pathways.

Investigation of the Production of Trifluoroacetic Acid from Two Halocarbons, HFC-134a and HFO-1234yf and Its Fates Using a Global Three-Dimensional Chemical Transport Model

Rayne Holland et al.

Summary: The study shows that transitioning from HFC-134a to HFO-1234yf leads to a significant increase in the global burden of TFA, with surface TFA concentrations increasing up to 250-fold in Europe. The increase in emissions from HFO-1234yf is likely to result in a substantial TFA burden as the atmosphere is unable to disperse relevant oxidation products.

A closer look into the contribution of atmospheric gas-phase pathways in the formation of perfluorocarboxylic acids

Mohammednoor Altarawneh

Summary: This study investigates the chemical mechanisms of fluorotelomer alcohols degrading in the atmosphere to produce perfluorocarboxylic acids, highlighting the potential non-gas phase formation of PFCAs in the atmosphere. Metals-rich silicate particles in aerosols and dust are suggested to mediate the formation of FTCAs and PFCAs from FTOHs in the atmosphere.
