Hallmarks of aging: An expanding universe

Carlos Lopez-Otin et al.

Summary: Aging is driven by hallmarks that manifest with age, accelerate aging when accentuated experimentally, and can be decelerated, stopped, or reversed with therapeutic interventions. The twelve proposed hallmarks of aging include genomic instability, telomere attrition, epigenetic alterations, loss of proteostasis, disabled macroautophagy, deregulated nutrient-sensing, mitochondrial dysfunction, cellular senescence, stem cell exhaustion, altered intercellular communication, chronic inflammation, and dysbiosis. These hallmarks are interconnected with each other and with the recently proposed hallmarks of health.

The relationship between telomere length and putative markers of vascular ageing: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Marinos Kosmopoulos et al.

Summary: This study found that leukocyte telomere length (LTL) is inversely correlated with arterial pulse wave velocity (aPWV) and carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT), with cIMT showing a stronger correlation with LTL. Patients without carotid plaques had longer telomeres, and LTL was associated with renal outcomes and coronary artery calcium. Among measures of end-organ damage, cIMT and aPWV were found to provide the most accurate information on the contribution of biological aging to vascular remodeling/damage.

Telomere Length: A Cardiovascular Biomarker and a Novel Therapeutic Target

Marios Sagris et al.

Summary: Coronary artery disease is a common disease with a high prevalence, particularly in developing countries. The investigation of telomeres as a potential tool for the early detection of atherosclerosis seems promising. Telomeres, repetitive DNA sequences at the ends of chromosomes, are important for maintaining genetic stability. Telomere length has been associated with various diseases, and its rate of shortening varies in the population. This review explores the pathophysiology of telomere shortening, its association with cardiovascular disease, and potential treatment options based on telomere length and telomerase function.

Cardiovascular Disease Projections in the United States Based on the 2020 Census Estimates

Reza Mohebi et al.

Summary: This study aims to project the number of people with cardiovascular risk factors and diseases in the future and uncover disparities based on sex, race, and ethnicity. It is projected that there will be significant increases in the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases by 2060, disproportionately affecting racial and ethnic minorities.

Leukocyte Telomere Length as a Molecular Biomarker of Coronary Heart Disease

Olga Zimnitskaya et al.

Summary: This review examines the role of telomeres and telomerase in the development and progression of coronary heart disease (CHD) through preclinical and clinical studies. It suggests that relative leukocyte telomere length (LTL) is associated with the development of cardiovascular diseases such as CHD and essential hypertension. However, implementing these findings in clinical practice is challenging due to differences in study design, methodology, and sample characteristics.

Mediterranean Diet Reduces Atherosclerosis Progression in Coronary Heart Disease An Analysis of the CORDIOPREV Randomized Controlled Trial

Jose Jimenez-Torres et al.

Summary: The study compared the effects of a Mediterranean diet and a low-fat diet on cardiovascular disease prevention, finding that the Mediterranean diet could reduce the progression of atherosclerosis, as shown by decreased IMT-CC and carotid plaque height.

Summary: In an older adult Spanish population, higher adherence to the Mediterranean dietary pattern was independently associated with longer telomeres, while the Western dietary pattern showed no significant association with telomere length.
