On the Cosmic Evolution of AGN Obscuration and the X-Ray Luminosity Function: XMM-Newton and Chandra Spectral Analysis of the 31.3 deg2 Stripe 82X

Alessandro Peca et al.

Summary: We conducted X-ray spectral analysis of AGNs in the S82X field using XMM-Newton and Chandra observations. Our results show that the population of AGNs in this field has a median spectral index of 1.94, a median column density of 20.7, and a median intrinsic, de-absorbed X-ray luminosity of 44.0. We observed an increase in the obscured AGN fraction with redshift, as well as a decline with increasing luminosity, which provides important constraints on the AGN obscuration and spectral shape.

Using Machine Learning to Determine Morphologies of z < 1 AGN Host Galaxies in the Hyper Suprime-Cam Wide Survey

Chuan Tian et al.

Summary: We propose a machine-learning framework for accurately characterizing the morphologies of active galactic nucleus (AGN) host galaxies within z < 1. The framework consists of two parts: PSFGAN for separating host galaxy light from the central point source, and GaMorNet for estimating the dominant morphology. The models built in three redshift bins achieve high prediction accuracy and classification precision, with a noticeable dependency on host galaxy radius and magnitude.

Summary: This paper describes the collection, processing, and analysis of new imaging data in the COSMOS field to produce a new reference photometric redshift catalog. The photometric methodologies and redshift codes used are shown to have high precision and self-consistency. The results have important implications for future surveys and the study of the COSMOS field.

Fitting AGN/Galaxy X-Ray-to-radio SEDs with CIGALE and Improvement of the Code

Guang Yang et al.

Summary: Modern and future surveys provide a panchromatic view for extragalactic objects. Consistently modeling these multiwavelength survey data is a critical task for extragalactic studies. Cigale, an efficient python code for SED fitting, has been extended to improve AGN modeling at UV-to-IR wavelengths. By applying the improved code to different samples, weaknesses were identified and addressed. These updates improve the fit quality and allow for new interpretations of the results, leading to discussions on the physical implications.

Supermassive black holes at high redshift are expected to be obscured by their massive host galaxies' interstellar medium

R. Gilli et al.

Summary: We combine results from deep ALMA observations to show that the column density of interstellar medium (ISM) in massive galaxies rapidly increases toward early cosmic epochs. Our study suggests that supermassive black holes in the early Universe are primarily hidden by the ISM in their host galaxies. We have developed an analytic model that successfully reproduces the increase in obscured AGN fraction with redshift observed in deep X-ray surveys. The observed X-ray nebulae impose stringent design constraints on the spatial resolution of future X-ray imaging observatories.

BASS. XXX. Distribution Functions of DR2 Eddington Ratios, Black Hole Masses, and X-Ray Luminosities

Tonima Tasnim Ananna et al.

Summary: This study determines the low-redshift X-ray luminosity function, active black hole mass function (BHMF), and Eddington ratio distribution function (ERDF) for unobscured (Type 1) and obscured (Type 2) active galactic nuclei (AGNs) using the unprecedented spectroscopic completeness of the BAT AGN Spectroscopic Survey (BASS) data release 2. Results show that the intrinsic ERDF of Type 2 AGNs is significantly more skewed toward lower Eddington ratios than the intrinsic ERDF of Type 1 AGNs, supporting the radiation-regulated unification scenario.

Accretion history of AGN: Estimating the host galaxy properties in X-ray luminous AGN from z=0-3

Brandon Coleman et al.

Summary: The aim of this study is to determine the intrinsic far-infrared emission of X-ray-luminous quasars over cosmic time. By analyzing data from the Stripe 82 field surveyed by XMM-Newton and Herschel Space Observatory, the researchers identified 2905 X-ray luminous active galactic nuclei (AGN) in the redshift range of approximately 0-3. Only 10% of the AGN were detected both in the X-ray and infrared, indicating a need to explore the mean IR emission of the undetected sources. Stacking their Herschel/SPIRE images, the researchers found that the stacked sources generally have similar star formation rate as the IR detected sources.

Probing the Structure and Evolution of BASS Active Galactic Nuclei through Eddington Ratios

Tonima Tasnim Ananna et al.

Summary: This study constrains the intrinsic Eddington ratio distribution function for local AGNs and explores the implications of circumnuclear geometry and temporal evolution on the fraction of obscured AGNs. The results show that obscured AGNs outnumber unobscured ones at low Eddington ratios, reflecting the covering factor of the circumnuclear material. At high Eddington ratios, the trend is reversed, suggesting a small fraction of time spent in a highly obscured state. The study also finds that nearly all obscured AGNs at high Eddington ratios exhibit some broad lines, indicating the visibility of the broad-line region from all lines of sight due to the depleted torus height.

Dust-enshrouded AGNs Can Dominate Host-galaxy-scale Cold Dust Emission

Jed McKinney et al.

Summary: It is commonly believed that long-wavelength infrared emission from cold dust serves as a reliable indicator of star formation, even in the presence of a bright active galactic nucleus (AGN). AGN-heated host-galaxy-scale dust can significantly increase the infrared flux densities of galaxies, leading to potential overestimation of star formation rates calculated from FIR luminosity.

Summary: The study suggests that in the late stages of galaxy mergers, the Compton thick AGN peak when the nuclei are at distances of 0.4-6 kpc, with the majority of AGNs being heavily obscured in the final merger stages. Additionally, Compton thick AGNs tend to have higher X-ray luminosities, possibly due to more gas available or a selection bias.
