Dependence of Energetic Storm Particle Heavy Ion Peak Intensities and Spectra on Source CME Longitude and Speed

A. Santa Fe Duenas et al.

Summary: We examined the variations in heavy ion peak intensities and energy spectra of energetic storm particles (ESP) at CME-driven interplanetary shocks. The observations showed dependence on heliolongitude relative to the source region of their associated CMEs and CME speed. We found that the organization of ESP events at 1 au is influenced by the longitude of their CME solar source and the speed of the CME. The observations also revealed that high-speed events have larger angular extension and heavier ion peak intensities near the nose of the shock. The study emphasizes the significance of spacecraft position relative to CME source longitude and CME speed in understanding the properties of ESP events at 1 au.

Modeling the 2012 May 17 Solar Energetic Particle Event Using the AWSoM and iPATH Models

Gang Li et al.

Summary: This study models the 2012 May 17 solar energetic particle event by combining the AWSoM and iPATH codes, and finds reasonable agreements between simulation and observation results. It suggests that a trustworthy solar energetic particle forecast should be made in an ensemble average approach, taking into account uncertainties in magnetic field connectivity and shock profiles.
