A 3D view of dwarf galaxies with Gaia and VLT/FLAMES I. The Sculptor dwarf spheroidal

Eline Tolstoy et al.

Summary: We present a new survey of radial velocities and metallicities for red giant stars in the Sculptor dwarf spheroidal galaxy, which includes the largest and most complete sample in any dwarf galaxy. Our analysis reveals a metallicity gradient and a distinct kinematic property for the most metal-poor population in Sculptor. In addition, combining our results with Gaia DR3 photometry provides a more detailed understanding of the resolved stellar population in Sculptor. This survey highlights the importance of stellar spectroscopy in modeling galaxy formation and evolution on small scales.

Gaia early DR3 systemic motions of Local Group dwarf galaxies and orbital properties with a massive Large Magellanic Cloud

G. Battaglia et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively determines the systemic proper motions of 74 dwarf galaxies in the Local Group based on Gaia early data release 3, and the results are publicly available. Using a Bayesian methodology, the analysis takes into account the location of stars on different charts, revealing potential associations between some galaxies and the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The study also delves into the orbital properties of galaxies, particularly noting the impact of the infall of a massive LMC on their trajectories.

Stellar kinematics of dwarf galaxies from multi-epoch spectroscopy: application to Triangulum II

Rachel Buttry et al.

Summary: In this study, we present new spectroscopic measurements for 257 stars observed along the line of sight to the dwarf galaxy Triangulum II (Tri II) and develop a methodology to infer the binary orbital parameters of the stars. However, the current data is still insufficient to resolve the velocity dispersion of Tri II.

Stellar dynamics and dark matter in Local Group dwarf galaxies

Giuseppina Battaglia et al.

Summary: This article reviews the properties of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, focusing on their stellar dynamics and dark matter content and distribution. The combination of observed data and dynamical models reveals that these galaxies are mostly dominated by dark matter halos, making them valuable for studying the nature of dark matter.

GaiaHub: A Method for Combining Data from the Gaia and Hubble Space Telescopes to Derive Improved Proper Motions for Faint Stars

Andres del Pino et al.

Summary: GaiaHub is a publicly available tool that combines Gaia measurements with Hubble Space Telescope (HST) archival images to derive proper motions. It increases the accuracy of proper motion measurements, especially for faint sources. By using GaiaHub, we are able to study MW globular clusters and dwarf spheroidal satellite galaxies and obtain interesting results.

Multiplicity Statistics of Stars in the Sagittarius Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy: Comparison to the Milky Way

Victoria Bonidie et al.

Summary: Using time-resolved spectra from APOGEE, we examined the distribution of radial velocity variations in stars identified as members of the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy. We found that the shape of the distribution of RV shifts in Sagittarius stars is similar to that measured in Milky Way analogs, but the fraction of RV variable stars in Sagittarius is larger. After ruling out other explanations, we conclude that the fraction of close binaries in Sagittarius is intrinsically higher than in the Milky Way.

Gaia Early Data Release 3 Summary of the contents and survey properties

A. G. A. Brown et al.

Summary: Gaia EDR3 is the early installment of the third data release from the Gaia project, providing astrometry and photometry for 1.8 billion sources brighter than magnitude 21, along with radial velocities from Gaia DR2. The data processing precision and homogeneity have significantly improved compared to the previous version, with additional information on celestial bodies and an updated celestial reference frame.

The Gas Content and Stripping of Local Group Dwarf Galaxies

Mary E. Putman et al.

Summary: The study presents the gas content of Local Group dwarf galaxies using H i survey data, revealing that most dwarf galaxies within the virial radii of the Milky Way and M31 lack gas. More of the undetected dwarf galaxies are found within the Local Group virial radius. The results suggest that halo densities play a significant role in stripping dwarf galaxies of gas.
