The PEPSI Exoplanet Transit Survey (PETS). II. A Deep Search for Thermal Inversion Agents in KELT-20 b/MASCARA-2 b with Emission and Transmission Spectroscopy*

Marshall C. Johnson et al.

Summary: Recent observations have shown that the atmospheres of ultrahot Jupiters commonly possess temperature inversions. However, it remains unclear which opacity sources are responsible for these inversions. In this study, the atmosphere of the ultrahot Jupiter KELT-20 b was observed in both transmission and emission to search for molecular agents that could contribute to the temperature inversion. Through testing and analysis, it was found that TiO and CaH can be ruled out as the sources, while more accurate line lists are needed to determine the possibility of VO contributing to the inversion.

Unifying High- and Low-resolution Observations to Constrain the Dayside Atmosphere of KELT-20b/MASCARA-2b

David Kasper et al.

Summary: We conducted high-resolution dayside thermal emission observations of exoplanet KELT-20b/MASCARA-2b using the MAROON-X spectrograph. We confirmed previous detections of Fe i emission lines and made the first detection of Ni i in the planet. However, we did not observe any evidence for other species, including predicted thermal inversion agents TiO and VO, their atomic constituents Ti i and V i, and previously claimed species Fe ii and Cr i. Our results provide insight into the composition of KELT-20b's atmosphere and the presence of TiO and H2O.

Detection of iron emission lines and a temperature inversion on the dayside of the ultra-hot Jupiter KELT-20b

F. Yan et al.

Summary: This study presents high-resolution thermal emission spectroscopy of the transiting Ultra-hot Jupiter (UHJ) KELT-20b/MASCARA-2b. By using the CARMENES spectrograph, the researchers detected atomic Fe in the atmosphere and determined a strong temperature inversion on the dayside hemisphere. The joint retrieval of the CARMENES and TESS data demonstrates the effectiveness of combining high-resolution emission spectroscopy with secondary eclipse photometry in characterizing atmospheric temperature structures.

Silicon in the dayside atmospheres of two ultra-hot Jupiters

D. Cont et al.

Summary: This study detects the presence of neutral silicon in the dayside atmospheres of two ultra-hot Jupiters for the first time via observation of their thermal emission spectra. The detection of silicon is significant as it plays a fundamental role in cloud formation and the planetary energy balance. The results also confirm the presence of an inverted temperature profile in the dayside atmospheres of both planets.

The GAPS Programme at TNG XXXIII. HARPS-N detects multiple atomic species in emission from the dayside of KELT-20b

F. Borsa et al.

Summary: The detection of emission lines in planetary atmospheres provides direct evidence of temperature inversion. We confirmed the presence of temperature inversions on the daysides of ultra-hot Jupiters orbiting A-type stars by detecting metals emission lines in the dayside of KELT-20b. Our analysis revealed the presence of Fe I, Fe II, and Cr I emissions, with Cr I being detected in an exoplanet atmosphere for the first time. Contrary to Fe I, Fe II, and Cr I were only detected after the occultation, indicating different atmospheric properties during different orbital phases.

Summary: Ground-based, high-resolution spectrographs provide a new perspective for studying the dynamics and chemistry of the atmospheres of planets outside the Solar System. This study explores the potential of using the FIES spectrograph on the Nordic Optical Telescope to investigate exoplanetary atmospheres, and successfully detects the signals of iron ions during the transits.

Atmospheric Rossiter-McLaughlin effect and transmission spectroscopy of WASP-121b with ESPRESSO

F. Borsa et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the atmospheric features of WASP-121b using a high-resolution spectrograph, identifying a correlation between the planetary atmospheric layer and the stellar mask, as well as detecting significant absorption of various elements in the transmission spectrum. The study also confirmed the presence of certain elements through the cross-correlation technique, indicating the existence of high-altitude atmospheric layers with large line broadening.

Five carbon- and nitrogen-bearing species in a hot giant planet's atmosphere

Paolo Giacobbe et al.

Summary: Observations of hot Jupiter HD 209458b indicate the presence of various molecules in its atmosphere, including water, carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide, methane, ammonia, and acetylene. These findings suggest a carbon-rich chemistry with a higher carbon-to-oxygen ratio than the solar value, potentially related to planet formation and migration scenarios. This challenges the assumption of solar-like and oxygen-rich compositions in hot Jupiters.

Non-local thermodynamic equilibrium effects determine the upper atmospheric temperature structure of the ultra-hot Jupiter KELT-9b

L. Fossati et al.

Summary: The atmospheric temperature of the ultra-hot Jupiter KELT-9b is found to be higher than predicted, with NLTE effects driving the high temperature by modifying the level populations of Fe and Mg. The Cloudy NLTE model produces stronger absorption lines than the LTE model, with an excellent match to observed line profiles, indicating the importance of NLTE effects in shaping the upper atmospheric temperature structure of KELT-9b. Future observations aiming at detecting features in the KELT-9b transmission spectrum should consider the NLTE synthetic transmission spectrum. The study suggests a need to investigate NLTE effects on cooler planets as well.

Confirmation of Asymmetric Iron Absorption in WASP-76b with HARPS

Aurora Y. Kesseli et al.

Summary: Hot Jupiters like WASP-76b have been found to exhibit asymmetric iron absorption features on their nightsides, representing the first observed chemical gradient on an exoplanet. By confirming this feature with archival HARPS data and showing that it can be detected on smaller telescopes through multiple transits, researchers can now make chemical comparisons between exoplanets and map condensation across a range of parameters for the first time.
