Three-dimensional imaging of convective cells in the photosphere of Betelgeuse☆

A. Lopez Ariste et al.

Summary: This study uses spectropolarimetry to obtain the first 3D images of the photosphere of Betelgeuse and discovers the presence of forces that allow plasma to reach velocities close to the escape velocity. These mechanisms may be responsible for triggering mass loss and sustaining the observed large stellar winds.

Modelling magnetically channeled winds in 3D-I. Isothermal simulations of a magnetic O supergiant

Sethupathy Subramanian et al.

Summary: In this study, 3D magnetohydrodynamic simulations of magnetically channeled winds of magnetic massive stars were performed using the RIEMANN GEOMESH code. Results indicated that high magnetic confinement reduces mass-loss rate, while higher rotation increases mass-loss rate.

The Spin-up of a Star Gaining Mass in a Close Binary System on the Thermal Time Scale

Evgeny Staritsin

Summary: This study investigates the influence of mass exchange on the rapid rotation of Be stars in binary systems. During the mass-transfer phase, the accreting component is accelerated in rotation, and its mass and angular momentum increase. The study also found that meridional circulation effectively transports angular momentum inside the component during and after the mass-transfer phase. Mass transfer leads to the acquisition of rotation typical of Be stars by the accreting component.

Ultraviolet line profiles of slowly rotating massive star winds using the 'analytic dynamical magnetosphere' formalism

C. Erba et al.

Summary: Recent research has focused on the formation of UV resonance lines in slowly rotating magnetic massive stars with dynamical magnetospheres. These stars exhibit unique redshifted absorption features, and changes in line strength significantly affect the line profile shape.

Polarization simulations of stellar wind bow shock nebulae - II. The case of dust scattering

Manisha Shrestha et al.

Summary: The study investigates polarization generated by dust scattering in bow shock regions surrounding stellar sources using the Monte Carlo radiative transfer code SLIP. Results show that polarization behavior depends on dust composition and grain size, with polarization changing with temperature and optical depth due to dust emission. The simulations can constrain optical depth and dust properties of bow shock regions, providing estimates of local interstellar medium density and showing that increased dust density suppresses resulting polarization.
