Sub-per-cent determination of the brightness at the tip of the red giant branch in the Magellanic Clouds

Taylor J. Hoyt

Summary: The brightness at the tip of the red giant branch in the Magellanic Clouds sets the scale of the Universe and has been debated. Here a number of samples are drawn from across the Clouds and composited, providing sub-per-cent level agreement and measurements consistent with independent geometric constraints. The study also constrains the three-dimensional tilt of the Large Magellanic Cloud as well as the distance between the Small and Large Clouds.

Measurements of the Hubble Constant: Tensions in Perspective*

Wendy L. Freedman

Summary: Recent advancements in measuring the distances to nearby galaxies have led to improved calibrations of the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB) method, resulting in consistent values for the Hubble constant. The TRGB results show no statistically significant difference with values determined from the cosmic microwave background, and are also in agreement with other calibration methods such as SHoES and Spitzer plus Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Key Project Cepheid calibrations. The simplicity and small systematic uncertainties of the TRGB method make it a promising tool for exploring cosmological models without the need for additional physics beyond the standard (?CDM) cosmological model.

The Carnegie Chicago Hubble Program X: Tip of the Red Giant Branch Distances to NGC 5643 and NGC 1404

Taylor J. Hoyt et al.

Summary: The primary goal of the Carnegie Chicago Hubble Program is to calibrate the zero-point of the Type Ia supernova Hubble Diagram using Population II standard candles. By measuring two new Tip of the Red Giant Branch (TRGB) distances to NGC 5643 and NGC 1404, the program now has data on 15 SNe Ia. The high precision of the TRGB distances enables a significant measurement of the 3D displacement between galaxies within the Fornax cluster.

Gaia EDR3 view on galactic globular clusters

Eugene Vasiliev et al.

Summary: This study uses data from Gaia EDR3 to analyze the kinematic properties of Milky Way globular clusters, revealing various motion characteristics and highlighting the reliability and limitations of Gaia data. Despite some errors in parallax and PM measurements, the quality of Gaia astrometry has significantly improved in EDR3, providing valuable insights into star cluster properties.

OGLE-ing the Magellanic System: Optical Reddening Maps of the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds from Red Clump Stars

D. M. Skowron et al.

Summary: By analyzing the color properties of Red Clump stars, we have generated extensive reddening maps of the Magellanic Clouds, providing detailed information on the reddening levels in both the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds with high resolution and accuracy. The maps also reveal the metallicity gradient in both clouds and offer an interactive interface for further exploration.

The Parallax of omega Centauri Measured from Gaia EDR3 and a Direct, Geometric Calibration of the Tip of the Red Giant Branch and the Hubble Constant

John Soltis et al.

Summary: The study utilized data from the ESA Gaia mission to measure the trigonometric parallax of omega Cen, the most massive globular cluster in the Milky Way, resulting in a precise distance measurement. The calibrated luminosity of the red giant branch tip from the parallax data allowed for a precise estimation of the Hubble constant.
