Childhood trauma and amygdala nuclei volumes in youth at risk for mental illness

Nikita Nogovitsyn et al.

Summary: This study explored the structural changes in the amygdala associated with childhood trauma by using T1-weighted MRI scans and clinical assessments. It found that physical and sexual abuse had the largest effects on amygdala subregions. These alterations may mediate the risk of psychopathology in trauma-exposed youth.

Adverse childhood experiences and traumatic brain injury among adolescents: findings from the 2016-2018 National Survey of Children's Health

Dylan B. Jackson et al.

Summary: The study found a dose-response relationship between ACEs and TBI, with ADHD and conduct problems playing a moderating role in this association. In cases where adolescents are not involved in sports, ADHD and conduct problems attenuate the link between ACE exposure and TBI.

Examining the Association Between Childhood Trauma, Brain Injury, and Neurobehavioral Symptoms Among Survivors of Intimate Partner Violence: A Cross-Sectional Analysis

Altaf Saadi et al.

Summary: This study examined the relationship between childhood trauma, IPV-related brain injury, and neurobehavioral symptom burden among IPV survivors. The findings showed that childhood trauma was associated with overall neurobehavioral symptom burden, as well as emotional and somatic symptoms. IPV-related brain injury was associated with somatic symptoms in the full sample and cognitive symptoms in women with IPV-related brain injury. Posttraumatic stress symptoms partially mediated the effect of childhood trauma on neurobehavioral symptoms.

A Review of Family Environment and Neurobehavioral Outcomes Following Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury: Implications of Early Adverse Experiences, Family Stress, and Limbic Development

Jesse T. Fischer et al.

Summary: Pediatric traumatic brain injury is a public health crisis, and family environment plays a significant role in predicting neurobehavioral outcomes. However, the neural mechanisms linking family environment to these outcomes are not well-studied. By reviewing existing literature, this article summarizes the role of family environment in neurobehavioral sequelae in children with TBI and explores potential neural correlates. The study highlights the importance of environmental factors in TBI recovery outcomes.
