Chromosome evolution of Escherichia coli Nissle 1917 for high-level production of heparosan

Yanying Yu et al.

Summary: Through metabolic engineering, a nonpathogenic probiotic bacterium EcN was engineered to produce heparosan, a precursor of heparin. The amplification of the kps locus and subsequent modification of the strain allowed for the high-yield production of heparosan, which could be further purified and modified for industrial applications.

Heparin stimulates biofilm formation ofEscherichia colistrain Nissle 1917

Dandan Wu et al.

Summary: The study showed that heparin stimulated the biofilm formation of EcN. Both the sulfation and chain length of heparin contributed to enhancing the biofilm formation of EcN, which could potentially promote the intestinal colonization of probiotics to combat pathogen infections.

Protein A of Staphylococcus aureus strain NCTC8325 interacted with heparin

Hui Shi et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the protein A (SpA) of Staphylococcus aureus is a heparin-binding protein, contributing to the interaction between S. aureus and heparin. Mutating SpA or deleting the spa gene can reduce the binding capability of S. aureus to heparin.
