Microstructure and Thermal Cycling Behavior of Ta2O5 and Y2O3 Co-doped ZrO2 Coatings

Dong Chen et al.

Summary: Ta2O5-Y2O3 co-doped ZrO2 (TYSZ) powders were synthesized and a TYSZ coating was prepared by atmospheric plasma spraying (APS). The properties of TYSZ and YSZ coating were studied. The results showed that the TYSZ coating had a layered structure and the coating bond strength was 27.5 MPa. After high-temperature heat treatment, the TYSZ coating reverted to the t phase. The thermal cycling test revealed that spalling and cracking occurred in the TYSZ coating due to the mismatch in the coefficient of thermal expansion between the coating and the substrate.

Phase decompositions of Gd2Zr2O7+8YSZ TBC systems under the condition of long-term high-temperature oxidation

Amjad Iqbal et al.

Summary: The article presents the results of research on the phase composition of two-phase TBC systems using GZO and modified 8YSZ. Composite coatings with different powder proportions were evaluated, and high temperature oxidation was performed to assess changes in phase composition. It was found that GZO + 8YSZ coatings were highly susceptible to phase composition changes, resulting in the formation of new zirconate and zirconium oxide phases. The ceramic layer also exhibited a high concentration of nickel oxide and a slightly lower concentration of chromium oxide.

High temperature stability and sintering resistance of Gd2O3-Yb2O3-Y2O3-ZrO2 (GYYZO) coating

Yuhang Zhang et al.

Summary: Solid-solution agglomerated ZrO2-based powders co-doped with Gd2O3, Yb2O3 and Y2O3 rare earth oxides were synthesized via solid-phase sintering and spray drying. The resulting GYYZO coating exhibited better phase stability and sintering resistance compared to the 8YSZ coating, as demonstrated by SEM, XRD, DSC, EPMA, and TEM analyses. The superior high temperature performance of the GYYZO coating can be attributed to the pinning effect of nano-pores on grain boundaries, which were formed due to the evolution of defect clusters facilitated by Gd-Yb co-doping.

Summary: Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) face a serious threat from calcium-magnesium-alumina-silicate (CMAS) corrosion. The search for new ceramic coatings with excellent resistance to CMAS corrosion for TBCs is ongoing. This study investigates the CMAS corrosion resistance behavior and mechanism of a promising Hf6Ta2O17 ceramic coating. Results show that temperature is the most important factor affecting CMAS behavior and mechanism, with different corrosion products formed at different temperatures.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of hydrostatic simulation on the early-stage high-pH stress corrosion crack growth of X65 pipeline steel. Results showed that hydrostatic simulation enhanced the initiation and coalescence of microcracks in the plastic zone, leading to accelerated crack growth. The findings explain why hydrostatic testing retards the growth of large cracks but facilitates the initiation and growth transition of small cracks in the plastic zone.

Nondestructive measurements of residual stress in air plasma-sprayed thermal barrier coatings

Summary: A novel approach to indicate delamination in APS TBCs by measuring the residual stress evolution of TGO is proposed and verified by a combination of PLPS and X-ray computed tomography. Mineral-oil impregnating and cold-mount low-shrinkage epoxy-mounting approaches are used to improve detectable signals and X-ray transmission for stress measurement and delamination characterization. The synchronous evolution of TGO residual stress, TGO thickness, and critical microcracks as a function of oxidation time is obtained and correlated, verifying that TBC delamination can be effectively indicated by residual stress evolution of TGO in APS TBCs.
