Sub-chronic ammonia exposure induces hepatopancreatic damage, oxidative stress, and immune dysfunction in red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii)

Wang Lin et al.

Summary: Ammonia, a major water pollutant in aquaculture, has negative effects on the antioxidant and innate immune responses in crustaceans. This study investigated these effects in red swamp crayfish exposed to different concentrations of ammonia. The results showed that high concentrations of ammonia induced hepatopancreatic injury and suppressed the antioxidant capacity and innate immunity of P. clarkii.

miR-144 and DJ-1/NF-KB regulates UCP4 maintain mitochondrial homeostasis in Penaeus vannamei

MuFei Ou et al.

Summary: This study reveals the antioxidant function of PvUCP4 in crustaceans, which protects mitochondrial function and maintains cellular homeostasis. PvUCP4 expression is negatively regulated by pva-miR-144. Knockdown of PvUCP4 under V. alginolyticus stress results in oxidative stress, apoptosis, and mitochondrial damage. Co-transfection of pva-miR-144 and PvUCP4 partially restores mitochondrial membrane potential and inhibits apoptosis.

The Assessment of Dietary Organic Zinc on Zinc Homeostasis, Antioxidant Capacity, Immune Response, Glycolysis and Intestinal Microbiota in White Shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei Boone, 1931)

Jinzhu Yang et al.

Summary: This study examined the effects of dietary organic zinc on various physiological aspects in white shrimp, including zinc homeostasis, antioxidant capacity, immune response, glycolysis, and intestinal microbiota. The results showed that organic zinc had positive effects on zinc content, antioxidant capacity, immunity, glucose metabolism, and intestinal microbiota. Overall, organic zinc was found to be a more beneficial and bioavailable zinc resource than inorganic zinc in shrimp feeds.

Effects of air exposure stress on crustaceans: Histopathological changes, antioxidant and immunity of the red swamp crayfish Procambarus clarkii

Yan-Mei Zhang et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the histopathological changes, antioxidant capacity, and immunity response of Procambarus clarkii, a main commercial aquaculture species in China, under air exposure stress. The results showed that air exposure stress can cause oxidative damage and that bacterial infection can worsen the damage. Additionally, the activity of antioxidant enzymes and the expression of stress- and immunity-related genes were affected by air exposure stress.

Immune responses and immunoprotection in crustaceans with special reference to shrimp

Amod Kulkarni et al.

Summary: Crustacean aquaculture, especially shrimp production, is a profitable sector worldwide. Despite lacking a vertebrate-like adaptive immune system, shrimp have an efficient innate immune system consisting of cellular and humoral components. Signal pathways are initiated by pattern recognition receptors, producing effector molecules to combat pathogens.

Vigour-related traits and immunity in hybrids of evolutionary divergent cyprinoid species: advantages of hybrid heterosis?

Andrea Simkova et al.

Summary: The study examines the potential physiological and immune aspects of hybrid vigor by comparing different species and their F1 hybrids caught in nature. Significant differences were found in vigor-related, physiological, and immune parameters between the divergent species. Hybrids generally exhibit intermediate traits, but may show similarities to one parental species for certain characteristics, indicating a heterozygote advantage for F1 hybrids.
