Environmental performance of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) production in Galicia-Spain: A Life Cycle Assessment approach

Joan Sanchez-Matos et al.

Summary: Aquaculture is becoming increasingly important for global food supply, but its growth is constrained by environmental impacts. Spain, as a major supplier, accounts for 25% of aquaculture production in the European Union. This study used Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to evaluate the production of rainbow trout in a medium-sized plant in Galicia, Spain. The results showed that aquafeed had a significant impact on most categories, and farm operation was responsible for freshwater eutrophication.

The evolution of integrated multi-trophic aquaculture in context of its design and components paving way to valorization via optimization and diversification

Sinan Nissar et al.

Summary: The declining productivity of marine resources and the increasing demand for fish and its products have necessitated the intensification of aquaculture systems. This intensification has led to the problem of nutrient loading and disrupted the functioning of aquatic ecosystems. Integrated multitrophic aquaculture (IMTA) has evolved as a solution, simulating a co-culture system that mimics a natural aquatic ecosystem to minimize waste production. IMTA offers a sustainable approach to aquaculture by combining fed aquaculture species with extractive species and utilizing the waste from fed species to culture extractive species. This article reviews the evolution of IMTA and its components, design, and ways to optimize the system.

Total fishmeal replacement by defatted Tenebrio molitor larvae meal induces alterations in intermediary metabolism of European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax)

Ana Basto et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of partial and total fishmeal replacement by insect meal on intermediary metabolism of European sea bass. The results showed that the selected insect meal can replace 50% of fishmeal without adversely affecting liver health or intermediary metabolism. However, total fishmeal replacement may compromise fish health in the long-term.

Optimization of aquaculture sustainability through ecological intensification in China

Shuang-lin Dong et al.

Summary: As the world's leading producer of farmed aquatic food products, China faces uncertainty in the further sustainable development of its aquaculture industry due to environmental and resource constraints. To address this, an evaluation system and a holistic approach are proposed to optimize aquaculture systems. Ten major aquaculture production systems in China were assessed using analytical hierarchy processes and expert judgment, and the ecological intensification of aquaculture systems (ELIAS) was proposed to enhance sustainability. The holistic evaluation system and ELIAS are crucial for the future development of aquaculture in China and globally.

Quantifying environmental impacts of cleaner fish used as sea lice treatments in salmon aquaculture with life cycle assessment

Gaspard Philis et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the environmental impacts of sea lice issues in Norwegian salmon farming, examining different treatment methods, the footprint of cleaner fish value chains, and the contribution of biological lice treatments to the salmon footprint. The research found that wrasse fishing has lower impacts compared to farmed lumpfish and wrasse, but ecosystem impacts and cleaner fish delousing efficiencies need further investigation for a comprehensive comparison. Overall, biological lice treatments are found to have a low contribution to the environmental footprint of salmon production, suggesting that it could be a viable option for sustainable salmon treatment, contingent on confirming treatment efficiency, accounting for ecosystem impacts, and addressing cleaner fish welfare issues.

Life cycle assessment of tiger puffer (Takifugu rubripes) farming: A case study in Dalian, China

Haochen Hou et al.

Summary: The environmental impact of tiger puffer farming in China was evaluated using a life cycle assessment (LCA), with a focus on energy consumption and carbon emissions. The study identified the marine aquatic ecotoxicity potential as the largest contributor to the environmental impact. Industrial recirculating aquaculture was found to be the most significant farming stage. Recommendations were made to improve the environmental performance, including the use of renewable energy sources and the exploration of new production strategies.

Recent advances of selected novel processing techniques on shrimp allergenicity: A review

Xin Dong et al.

Summary: Shrimp allergy is a global health issue, and novel non-thermal processing techniques show promise in reducing shrimp allergenicity. Ultrasound processing is the most commonly discussed technique. A combination of several processing techniques can effectively reduce shrimp allergenicity compared to using a single technique. However, studies on the application of novel processing techniques to reduce/modify shrimp allergens are still limited, and further research is needed to improve processing efficiency.

Decoupling Analysis of Net Carbon Emissions and Economic Growth of Marine Aquaculture

Hongjun Guan et al.

Summary: Decoupling carbon emissions from economic growth is crucial for the sustainable development of developing countries. This study analyzes the decoupling characteristics of net carbon emissions and the economic growth of marine aquaculture in China, and investigates the contributions of different regions, provinces, and factors using the Tapio decoupling index model and the logarithmic average weight decomposition method (LMDI model). The results indicate that there is a decoupling trend between net carbon emissions and the economic growth of marine aquaculture, but with significant regional differences. The study also identifies the factors that contribute to decoupling, with carbon emission intensity, aquaculture scale, aquaculture efficiency, and aquaculture structure playing varying roles across different regions.

Effects of feed formula and farming system on the environmental performance of shrimp production chain from a life cycle perspective

Ahmad Al Eissa et al.

Summary: This study conducted a life cycle assessment on shrimp production chains in the United States and Vietnam, identifying the environmental impacts of intensive, semi-intensive, and extensive farming systems. The study found that feed production significantly contributes to terrestrial acidification and global warming potential, while shrimp farming dominates in freshwater eutrophication potential. Among the three production chains, intensive production has the highest freshwater eutrophication potential, while semi-intensive production has the highest terrestrial acidification potential.

The underestimated importance of fertilizer in aquacultural phosphorus budget: Case of Chinese mitten crab

Xin Liu et al.

Summary: China's heavy reliance on aquaculture to meet the growing demand for animal protein has led to low phosphorus use efficiency. Using life cycle assessment and substance flow analysis, this study developed a phosphorus flow model for Chinese mitten crab culture, revealing that the highest phosphorus input occurs during adult crab cultivation, and a significant portion accumulates in sediment.

Impacts of Coastal Shrimp Ponds on Saltwater Intrusion and Submarine Groundwater Discharge

Yuxuan Hou et al.

Summary: Shrimp aquaculture can lead to groundwater salinization and increased submarine groundwater discharge (SGD), but research on this topic is limited. In this study, a numerical simulation approach was used to assess the impacts of shrimp farm irrigation on groundwater salinization and SGD. The results showed that pond water depth had a primary control on the mass of saltwater infiltration, while farm width had a primary control on recovery rate. Both pond water salinity and depth affected fresh and saline SGD. This study highlights the previously unrecognized mechanism of aquaculture on coastal aquifer vulnerability and SGD, emphasizing the need for further research on the impact of aquaculture on coastal groundwater resources.
