Theoretical analysis of shape factor on performance of annular thermoelectric generators under different thermal boundary conditions

WenChao Zhu et al.

Summary: Based on the numerical model established in this study, the influence of geometrical parameters on the output performance of annular thermoelectric modules (ATEM) was investigated under three typical application scenarios with different boundary conditions. It was found that the shape factors of optimal performance differ slightly when considering constant heat flow on the hot side, with variations in output power and efficiency depending on thermocouple thickness, angle, length, and number. An optimization problem for obtaining the best ATEG performance was formulated and solved using the non-dominant sorting genetic algorithm with elite strategy method (NSGA-II), considering conflicting relationships between optimal output power and efficiency.

Summary: In this study, annular thermoelectric generators (ATEGs) that match the geometric shape of automobile exhaust pipes were proposed to recover waste heat from automobiles. A theoretical model was constructed to assess the performance of automotive exhaust ATEGs (AEATEGs) and compared to commonly used automotive exhaust flat-plate thermoelectric generators (AEFTEGs). Man-Wen Tian et al.

Summary: A novel hollow cylindrical leg structure for thermoelectric modules was investigated in this study using validated 3D numerical simulations. Results show that increasing the hot side temperature improves output power and conversion efficiency but decreases mechanical reliability, while increasing the slant angle of thermoelectric legs enhances power output. Additionally, increasing the width ratio improves the output power but reduces conversion and exergy efficiencies. The azimuthal angle of the thermoelectric generator has minimal impact on efficiencies.

Performance comparison of annular and flat-plate thermoelectric generators for cylindrical hot source

Mengjun Zhang et al.

Summary: This study compares the performances of annular thermoelectric generator (ATEG) and flat-plate thermoelectric generator (FTEG) with varying inlet temperature, velocity, and convective heat transfer coefficient when applied to cylindrical heat sources. The results show that both the output power and conversion efficiency of ATEG and FTEG increase with higher inlet velocity, temperature, and convective heat transfer coefficient. ATEG consistently exhibits higher conversion efficiency than FTEG, especially when the inlet temperature and/or convective heat transfer coefficient are relatively larger.
