Recent progress of advanced manganese oxide-based materials for acidic oxygen evolution reaction: Fundamentals, performance optimization, and prospects

Mengwei Guo et al.

Summary: This article reviews the application of manganese-based materials in catalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Manganese oxide-based (MnOx) materials, especially MnO2, have emerged as promising non-noble electrocatalysts for water electro-oxidation under acidic conditions. The electrocatalytic activity and lifetime of MnOx-based catalysts can be improved through crystal structure control, reasonable setting of working potential and electrolyte environment, optimal selection of acid-stable conductive supports, and self-healing engineering.

Effect of Glue, Thiourea, and Chloride on the Electrochemical Reduction in CuSO4-H2SO4 Solutions

Erika D. Nevarez-llamas et al.

Summary: The effect of glue, thiourea, and chloride on the kinetics of copper reduction in CuSO4-H2SO4 solutions was studied. The results showed that glue and thiourea decrease the exchange current density, while chloride has little effect. The adsorption of these additives on the electrode surface reduces the available cathodic area for Cu2+ adsorption and the diffusion of Cu atoms.

Electrochemical construction of S-doped MnOx/Mn integrated film on carbon paper in a choline chloride based deep eutectic solvent for enhanced electrochemical water oxidation

Mengwei Guo et al.

Summary: This study presents an integrated S-doped MnOx/Mn film developed on carbon paper as an efficient electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The S doping and in-situ electro-oxidation process enhance the catalytic performance by tailoring the electronic structure and phase composition of the electrode. The optimal S-doped MnOx/Mn/CP exhibits low overpotential, high stability, and significantly improved catalytic activity compared to MnOx/Mn/CP.

On the Origin of the OER Activity of Ultrathin Manganese Oxide Films

Paul Plate et al.

Summary: The study shows that manganese oxide films thinner than 1.5 nm are not oxygen evolution reaction (OER) active, while thicker films can serve as active catalysts for OER. One Mn-III,Mn-IV-O monolayer is sufficient to achieve oxygen evolution under alkaline conditions. The results provide important new design criteria for ultrathin manganese oxide oxygen evolution catalysts.

Selective recovery of cobalt from mixed lithium ion battery wastes using deep eutectic solvent

Pier Giorgio Schiavi et al.

Summary: This study presents a method for selectively recovering cobalt from mixed lithium-ion battery electrode materials using a green deep eutectic solvent (DES). The optimized solvent extraction procedure efficiently recovers cobalt as cobalt oxalate, which is then used to produce high-performance lithium cobalt oxide cathode material. The demonstrated selectivity of the leaching method and the ability to reuse the residual DES solution offer a green recycling alternative for reintroducing strategic materials into the lithium-ion battery production chain.

Dynamic Surface Chemistry of Catalysts in Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Zongkui Kou et al.

Summary: The dynamic surface chemistry of OER electrocatalysts is influenced by various factors, including the nature of catalysts/precatalysts, reaction and service conditions, and external fields. Due to the local, time-dependent and instant nature, there are considerable challenges in tracing, modelling and understanding the complete dynamic surface chemistry of catalysts in OER. Computational studies and dynamic simulations help provide key insights and there is a critical need for a multiscale computational modelling approach encompassing all these aspects.
