From CO2 capture to high-efficient and over-stable core-shell bimetallic catalysts for eliminating sulfamethoxazole

Yongsong Ma et al.

Summary: In this study, a series of core-shell bimetallic catalysts NixCo1-x@C (x = 0-1) with different graphitized degrees were prepared by one-step molten salt electrolysis method. The degradation rates of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) reached 85.60%, 100%, 100%, 98.79%, and 57.60% as the x values increased from 0 to 1 during the catalytic oxidation experiments. The alloying of Ni significantly enhanced the catalytic elimination performance of SMX by the NixCo1-x@C catalyst (x = 0.3) with a reaction rate (kobs) of 0.153 min-1. Increasing the Ni content also increased the graphitization of the carbon shell, reducing the metal Ni and Co leaching of Ni0.7Co0.3@C catalyst to low levels during the cycle's experiments. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) tests and classical quench experiments revealed that SO4 center dot-, center dot OH, O2 center dot-, and 1O2 co-degraded the SMX.

Structure-property relationship and mechanism of peroxymonosulfate activation by nitrogen-doped biochar for organic contaminant oxidation

Chen Chen et al.

Summary: Nitrogen-doped biochar has been found to effectively catalyze the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) in the degradation of organic contaminants. This study investigates the role of nitrogen bond configurations, oxygen-containing groups, and structural defects in the catalytic oxidation process. The results show that ketonic (C--O) groups and structural defects play a major role in PMS activation, acting as the dominant active sites. The findings provide new insights into the importance of nitrogen-doped biochar in PMS activation and offer theoretical support for the rational design of nitrogen doping strategies.

Recent advances in metal-organic frameworks-derived carbon-based materials in sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes for organic pollutant removal

Yinghao Shi et al.

Summary: Due to the increasing challenges of environmental pollution, the sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs) are gaining attention for their efficiency and environmental friendliness. The future development of SR-AOPs relies on the development of new catalysts with high activity and stability, such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-derived carbon-based materials (CMs). These CMs, prepared by pyrolyzing MOFs, have shown excellent performance in SR-AOPs and are a rapidly expanding research field.

Phosphorus doping to enhance the peroxymonosulfate activation efficiency of carbon nitride for degrading tetracycline

Liquan Wang et al.

Summary: A new type of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activator, phosphorus-doped carbon nitride (P-C3N4), was prepared using a simple thermal shrinkage method. Phosphorus doping in graphite-phase carbon nitride (g-C3N4) was achieved by replacing carbon atoms in its triazine ring structure with phosphorus, which did not alter the overall structure of g-C3N4. The phosphorus doping improved the surface electronic structure and pore structure optimization of g-C3N4, resulting in high efficiency for tetracycline (TC) degradation in the P-C3N4/PMS system. The study also proposed a mechanism for PMS activation using P-C3N4, and demonstrated that TC degradation occurred via ring-opening, hydroxylation, deamination, and dealkylation reactions.

Synthesizing and characterizing Fe3O4 embedded in N-doped carbon nanotubes-bridged biochar as a persulfate activator for sulfamethoxazole degradation

Tong Liu et al.

Summary: Nitrogen-doped magnetic carbon nanotubes-bridged biochar (Fe3O4@NCNTs-BC) was prepared and showed excellent capacity in activating persulfate for sulfamethoxazole (SMX) degradation. A direct electron transfer regime involving surface-bound metastable complexes was found to play a decisive role in the Fe3O4@NCNTs-BC800/peroxydisulfate (PDS) system. The differences in degradation performances and activation regimes were attributed to the surface hydroxyl groups of carbon-based catalysts and the structure discrepancies between PMS and PDS.
