Advanced surface engineering of titanium materials for biomedical applications: From static modification to dynamic responsive regulation

Pinliang Jiang et al.

Summary: Titanium (Ti) and its alloys are widely used as orthopedic implants due to their favorable mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, and biocompatibility. However, the failure, degradation, and revision rates are high in patients with low bone density, insufficient quantity of bone or osteoporosis. Therefore, surface modification of Ti is actively studied to improve clinical outcomes. This review discusses the surface characteristics of Ti materials, conventional surface modification techniques, and emerging dynamic responsive avenues for improving bioactivity and biocompatibility of Ti implants.

Effects of diabetes on osteocytes

Japneet Kaur et al.

Summary: A better understanding of the mechanisms underlying skeletal dysfunction in the context of diabetes is crucial for the development of therapeutic interventions. Recent research has shown that both type 1 and type 2 diabetes lead to decreased bone quality and formation. Osteocyte dysfunction plays a key role in diabetic skeletal disease, and interventions targeting the RAGE signaling pathway, senescent cells, and sclerostin or mechanically stimulating osteocytes may alleviate the negative effects of diabetes on bone quality.

Upregulation of mitochondrial dynamics is responsible for osteogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells cultured on self-mineralized collagen membranes

Mei-Chen Wan et al.

Summary: The study identified that activation of mitochondrial dynamics plays a central role in HCM-mediated osteogenic differentiation of MSCs. Mitochondriogenesis, fusion, fission, and mitophagy are responsible for the upregulation of mitochondrial dynamics during HCM-mediated osteogenic differentiation of MSCs. These findings provide new insights into the application of biomimetic mineralization in bone tissue regeneration.

Mitochondrial dynamics: Shaping and remodeling an organelle network

Adam R. Fenton et al.

Summary: Mitochondria form networks that are continually remodeled and adapted to carry out their cellular function. This remodeling is achieved through changes in morphology, number, and distribution, which are dependent on fission, fusion, shape transition, and transport/tethering along the cytoskeleton. Over the past few years, many mechanisms regulating these processes have been uncovered, showing precise and context-dependent regulation within the cell.
