First assessment of anthropogenic impacts in submarine canyon systems off southwestern Australia

Marco Taviani et al.

Summary: By quantifying macro-litter discovered during Remotely Operated Vehicle surveys, we evaluated the anthropogenic impacts on southwestern Australian submarine canyons. The Bremer canyon systems show minimal impacts, while the Perth Canyon has relatively more macro-litter due to intense maritime traffic and nearby urban development. However, the environmental status of southwestern Australian canyons is relatively pristine on a global scale, providing a baseline for monitoring and preserving these habitats with lush and diverse biota, including deep-sea corals.

Plastic debris in lakes and reservoirs

Veronica Nava et al.

Summary: Plastic debris is widely present in freshwater ecosystems globally, with lakes and reservoirs in densely populated and urbanized areas and large lakes and reservoirs with elevated deposition areas, long water-retention times and high levels of anthropogenic influence being particularly vulnerable. The concentrations of plastic vary among lakes, with some reaching or even exceeding those reported in marine areas collecting large amounts of debris such as the subtropical oceanic gyres. This study highlights the importance of including lakes and reservoirs in addressing plastic pollution for effective pollution management and the preservation of lake ecosystem services.

Global marine litter research 2015-2020: Geographical and methodological trends

Marthe Larsen Haarr et al.

Summary: A systematic review of research on marine macrolitter densities from 2015 to 2020 revealed knowledge gaps in the field. Data scarcity exists in regions mismanaging plastic waste, particularly in the high and deep seas. Lack of standardization hinders assessment and comparison of litter densities. The review highlights the need for survey design development and consideration of ecological research techniques.

Estimating floating macroplastic flux in the Santa Ana River, California

Win Cowger et al.

Summary: This study focuses on estimating the macroplastic flux in the Santa Ana River middle reach by monitoring the macroplastic concentration and using strategies commonly employed in estimating mineral sediment flux. The results show that channel processes control the size distribution of macroplastic, and different flow stages have different effects on plastic concentration. The annual flux of floating macroplastic is estimated to be 27.4 tonnes per year.

Trends in nitrogen, phosphorus, and sediment concentrations and loads in streams draining to Lake Tahoe, California, Nevada, USA

Joseph L. Domagalski et al.

Summary: A study of Lake Tahoe found that the lake's water quality is declining due to algae and fine sediment, leading to a decrease in water clarity. To maintain water clarity, wastewater is exported out of the basin. Over the past 25 years, nitrate loads have decreased, while ammonium loads initially decreased and then continued to increase after 2005, and organic phosphate loads showed significant increases between 2000 and 2005.

Microplastics in freshwater sediment: A review on methods, occurrence, and sources

Ling Yang et al.

Summary: This paper summarizes the occurrence and characteristics of microplastics in freshwater sediments, highlighting their ubiquitous presence and varying abundance in rivers, lakes, and reservoirs. The dominant shape of microplastics in freshwater sediment is fibers with a diameter less than 1 mm, with white/transparent and PE/PS as the most frequently recorded colors and types. The consistency in morphological characteristics and components of microplastics between marine and freshwater sediments may indicate their interlinkages and source-pathways.
