Phosphorus Acquisition and Utilization in Plants

Hans Lambers

Summary: Significant progress has been made on plant phosphorus nutrition at the molecular level, but there is a need to integrate information from various disciplines. Strategies to mobilize phosphorus in low-P soil are found to be more effective than mycorrhizal strategies. Understanding the trade-offs of different investment patterns in phosphorus fractions is crucial for optimizing plant growth.

Phosphate-solubilising microorganisms mainly increase plant phosphate uptake by effects of pH on root physiology

N. J. Barrow et al.

Summary: Organisms chosen for solubilising soil phosphate are selected based on their ability to produce acidity on a plate with sparingly soluble phosphate. If these organisms establish on plant roots, any benefits from increased acidity are likely to come from an increased rate of phosphate uptake by the roots rather than increased desorption from the soil.

Bacillus amyloliquefaciens as an excellent agent for biofertilizer and biocontrol in agriculture: An overview for its mechanisms

Lin Luo et al.

Summary: This review discusses the plant growth promotion (PGP) mechanisms of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens (BA) and its current limitations in agriculture. BA can improve soil nutrient availability, change soil microbial community, secrete hormones and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and enhance plant resistance against biotic and abiotic stresses. Future studies should focus on the nutrient uptake mechanisms of plants in different soil conditions.

Impacts of farmland application of antibiotic-contaminated manures on the occurrence of antibiotic residues and antibiotic resistance genes in soil: A meta-analysis study

Yu Zhang et al.

Summary: A meta-analysis was conducted to investigate the impacts of farmland application of antibiotic-contaminated manures on antibiotic concentrations and ARG abundances in manure-amended soil. The results showed that the use of antibiotic-contaminated manures significantly increased the levels of antibiotics and ARGs in the soil. Additionally, soil organic carbon and silt content were found to be correlated with antibiotic concentrations and ARG abundances.

Increasing nitrogen supply to phosphorus-deficient Medicago sativa decreases shoot growth and enhances root exudation of tartrate to discharge surplus carbon dependent on nitrogen form

Honghua He et al.

Summary: Nitrogen addition to P-deficient alfalfa decreased shoot growth and enhanced the release of tartrate, likely to discharge surplus carbon; and the effects varied with N form. Nitrogen addition weakened the positive effect of P addition on plant growth, and increased plant N and P concentrations, while P addition increased plant P concentration, but weakened the effect of N addition on plant N concentration. The amount of tartrate increased dramatically with increasing N rate, which decreased shoot growth, depending on N form.

Effects of oxytetracycline on plant growth, phosphorus uptake, and carboxylates in the rhizosheath of alfalfa

Zekun Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that the effects of OTC on plant growth and P uptake depended on both OTC and P doses in soil. Higher OTC doses negatively affected shoot P uptake and growth, especially at lower P doses, while they had a positive effect on root growth at higher P doses. Additionally, increasing OTC doses significantly reduced bulk soil alkaline phosphatase activity and strongly reduced rhizosheath tartrate amount at all P doses.

Redox-active antibiotics enhance phosphorus bioavailability

Darcy L. McRose et al.

Summary: This study explores the phenomenon of microbes increasing the production of redox-active antibiotics under phosphorus limitation, showing that these antibiotics solubilize phosphorus through reductive dissolution of iron oxides and enhance microbial growth under phosphorus-limited conditions. The research highlights the important role of antibiotics in phosphorus acquisition and cycling.

The microbial network property as a bio-indicator of antibiotic transmission in the environment

Qun Gao et al.

Summary: By analyzing bacterial networks and functional networks, this study found that as antibiotic concentrations decreased, both bacterial and functional networks increased in size, but bacterial networks became less clustered while functional networks became more clustered, indicating a transition from deterministic processes to stochastic processes in bacterial communities at intermediate antibiotic concentrations.

Summary: Antibiotics, widely used in animal growth and disease treatment, enter the soil and water through animal excrement, inducing plant resistance. Plants exposed to antibiotics experience physiological changes affecting basic metabolic processes like photosynthesis and nitrogen assimilation, and impacting plant growth and establishment processes.

Bacterial community assembly and antibiotic resistance genes in the lettuce-soil system upon antibiotic exposure

Yike Shen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of antibiotic exposure on bacterial community assembly and ARG profiles in lettuce, finding that antibiotics influenced alpha diversity values differently in different soil and plant samples. The study also suggested a stronger deterministic control of plant roots in bacterial community assembly.
