An Opto-Electronic HfOx-Based Transparent Memristive Synapse for Neuromorphic Computing System

Aftab Saleem et al.

Summary: This study presents a transparent bilayer memristor with both electrical and optical synapses, which exhibits good electrical properties after annealing. The device demonstrates excellent electrical characteristics, such as stable low resistance/high resistance cycles and long retention time even at high temperatures. It also shows stable potentiation and depression cycles for a large number of alternating current pulses with low nonlinearity. By applying consecutive alternating current pulses, synaptic properties like paired-pulse facilitation (PPF) and spike time-dependent plasticity (STDP) are calculated. The memristor is illuminated by a 405 nm light source to achieve multilevel cell (MLC) characteristics. The excellent attributes of this transparent memristor make it a promising candidate for electrical/optical memory devices or optically synaptic sensor devices.

Vertical 0.6 V sub-10 nm oxide-homojunction transistor gated by a silk fibroin/sodium alginate crosslinking hydrogel for pain-sensitization enhancement emulation

Jingya Su et al.

Summary: The development of a solid-state device for emulating pain recognition with ultralow voltage operation has been a great challenge. This study demonstrates a successful application of a vertical transistor with an ultrashort channel and ultralow voltage based on protonic silk fibroin/sodium alginate crosslinking hydrogel electrolyte. This device integrates pain perception, memory, and sensitization, and displays multi-state pain-sensitization enhancement abilities through Pavlovian training with the photogating effect of light stimulus. The cortical reorganization, which reveals the close relationship among pain stimulus, memory, and sensitization, is finally realized. This device provides great opportunities for multi-dimensional pain assessment and has significant implications for bio-inspired intelligent electronics.

Textural landscapes of VOC-sensitive chiral liquid crystal-based materials

Efthymia Ramou et al.

Summary: Liquid crystal-based materials with confined and ordered liquid crystal molecules can be tuned to exhibit various optical textures in response to physical and chemical stimuli. In this study, chiral liquid crystal formulations were constrained at an interface formed by ionic liquids, leading to the formation of immobilized ionic liquid/liquid crystal droplets on a gelatin matrix. These droplets display a rich variety of unique topological states, and their optical textures were categorized based on their relative chirality. Furthermore, their optical response in the presence of gas analytes was investigated, highlighting their potential as dynamic liquid crystal-based optical volatile organic compound sensors. The soft materials generated with semi-selective VOC sensing capabilities can be further employed in liquid crystal-based gas sensor arrays for complex gas sample analysis using artificial olfaction approaches.
