Optical Reading of Nanoscale Magnetic Bits in an Integrated Photonic Platform

Hamed Pezeshki et al.

Summary: In this paper, we propose a compact integrated hybrid plasmonic-photonic device that allows for optical reading of nanoscale magnetic bits with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in a magnetic racetrack. By utilizing localized surface plasmons, our device can detect the magnetization state of the bits beyond the diffraction limit of light. We demonstrate how combining our hybrid device with a plasmonic polarization rotator enables magneto-optical read-out.

Integrated Hybrid Plasmonic-Photonic Device for All-Optical Switching and Reading of Spintronic Memory

Hamed Pezeshki et al.

Summary: We propose a hybrid plasmonic-photonic device for all-optical switching and reading in on-chip spintronic memory. By coupling V-shaped gold plasmonic nanoantennas with a photonic crystal cavity, our device can switch and read nanoscale bits with high precision. It outperforms bare photonic waveguide by allowing the manipulation of targeted bits as small as 100 nm in the presence of magnetized background regions up to 120 nm wide. This hybrid device bridges the gap between integrated photonics and nanoscale spintronics, enabling the development of advanced on-chip applications.

Dynamics of all-optical single-shot switching of magnetization in Tb/Co multilayers

K. Mishra et al.

Summary: Recent works have demonstrated the all-optical switching of magnetization in Tb/Co multilayers using ultrashort laser pulses, while the same process is not achievable in TbCo alloys. In this study, we provide a plausible explanation for this difference based on the angular momenta treatment and gyromagnetic ratio of rare-earth-based ferrimagnets. Furthermore, we investigate the composition-dependent dynamic behavior of the switching process in Tb/Co multilayers through single-shot time-resolved pump-probe experiments, revealing it deviates from the accepted framework applicable to Gd-based systems and Mn-containing Heusler alloys.

Single-pulse all-optical partial switching in amorphous DyxCo1-x and TbxCo1-x with random anisotropy

Zexiang Hu et al.

Summary: Toggle switching behavior is observed in thin films of sperimagnetic amorphous DyxCo1-x and TbxCo1-x irradiated with single fast laser pulses. The films exhibit strong local random anisotropy, and subsequent laser pulses lead to partial re-switching of a decreasing amount of material, resulting in a granular structure. The toggle switching is attributed to the temperature-dependent ratio of local anisotropy to exchange.

Picosecond optospintronic tunnel junctions

Luding Wang et al.

Summary: Researchers report an optospintronic tunnel junction (OTJ) device with a picosecond switching speed, ultralow power consumption, high magnetoresistance ratio, and nonvolatility. The device allows all-optical writing within 10 ps and shows reliable resistance readout with a relatively high tunnel magnetoresistance. The OTJ has potential for scaling toward the nanoscale and could pave the way for a new category of integrated spintronic-photonic memory devices.

Enhancing all-optical switching of magnetization by He ion irradiation

Pingzhi Li et al.

Summary: In this paper, the enhancement of all-optical switching (AOS) in Co/Gd synthetic ferrimagnets by He ion irradiation is explored. The intermixing of magnetic layers caused by He ion irradiation significantly enhances AOS, and the threshold fluence of AOS can be reduced by almost 30%. This study reveals the potential of He ion irradiation for industrially compatible local AOS engineering.

Role of spin-lattice coupling in ultrafast demagnetization and all optical helicity-independent single-shot switching in Gd1-x-yTbyCox alloys

Wei Zhang et al.

Summary: All optical switching (AOS) of magnetization has great potential for ultrafast and energy-efficient memory applications. In this study, Gd1-x-yTbyCox alloys were investigated to understand the influence of Tb concentration on magnetization dynamics. The results showed that the ultrafast demagnetization time was independent of Tb concentration, but the range of laser fluence and pulse duration for AO-HIS became narrower with increasing Tb concentration. Atomistic simulations explained that AO-HIS was prohibited by increasing the Tb content due to a larger damping for Tb than Gd.

Influence of magnetic fields on ultrafast laser-induced switching dynamics in Co/Gd bilayers

M. J. G. Peeters et al.

Summary: This study experimentally resolves the dynamics of the switching process in Co/Gd and investigates the influence of applied magnetic fields on the process. The research finds that after a switch within several picoseconds, the magnetization switches back at a time scale of hundreds of picoseconds. This backswitch shows a strong dependence on the magnetic field strength, even at subtesla fields.

Control of magnetic properties in ferrimagnetic GdFe and TbFe thin films by He+ and Ne+ irradiation

Michal Krupinski et al.

Summary: The impact of kiloelectronvolt He+ and kiloelectronvolt Ne+ ion irradiation on the magnetic properties of rare earth-3d transition metal amorphous alloys was investigated. It was found that fine-tuning of the compensation point in the alloys is possible without losing perpendicular magnetic anisotropy by appropriate selection of ion energy and irradiation dose. Additionally, the experiments were supported by atomistic simulations revealing that the observed changes can be attributed to selective oxidation of rare earth atoms.
