Wide-range continuous tuning of the thermal conductivity of La0.5Sr0.5CoO3-δ films via room-temperature ion-gel gating

Yingying Zhang et al.

Summary: The authors demonstrate a continuous tuning of the thermal conductivity of strontium-doped lanthanum cobaltite by a factor of >5 at room temperature, via an electrolyte-gate-induced non-volatile topotactic phase transformation from perovskite to brownmillerite. The effects of these transitions on heat carriers, including electrons and lattice vibrations, are uncovered and deconvolved through various experiments and analyses. This research opens the door to non-volatile dynamic control of thermal transport in perovskite-based functional materials for thermal regulation and management in device applications.

Thickness-Dependent Thermal Conductivity and Phonon Mean Free Path Distribution in Single-Crystalline Barium Titanate

Ankit Negi et al.

Summary: In this study, the thermal conductivity and phonon mean free path (MFP) distribution of barium titanate (BTO) were determined through experimental measurements and first-principles modeling. The results show that phonons with sub-100 nm MFP dominate the thermal transport in BTO, and phonons with MFP exceeding 10 nm contribute approximately 35% to the total thermal conductivity. These findings are consistent with the theoretical predictions of other crystals with strong anharmonicity.

Intrinsic thermal conductivity of ZrC from low to ultrahigh temperatures: A critical revisit

Janak Tiwari et al.

Summary: Current phonon transport theory based on ground-state calculations predicts thermal conductivity at room and medium temperatures accurately, but fails to represent behavior at high temperatures. In this study, we include high-order phonon scattering, lattice expansion, temperature-dependent force constants, and interband phonon conduction to predict the thermal conductivity of ZrC from 300 to 3500 K. We find that four-phonon scattering significantly reduces the phonon thermal conductivity, and after considering all factors, the phonon thermal conductivity follows a similar to T -1.5 dependency. Temperature-dependent force constants affect the phonon scattering rates and increase the interband processes. The contribution of interband phonon conduction is small even at ultrahigh temperatures. Electronic thermal transport is sensitive to temperature-dependent lattice constants. Theoretical predictions in the literature tend to overestimate phonon thermal conductivity and underestimate electronic thermal conductivity, resulting in an overall underprediction.

Combined experimental-theoretical study of electron mobility-limiting mechanisms in SrSnO3

Tristan K. Truttmann et al.

Summary: The research demonstrates that epitaxial thin films of perovskite oxide NdxSr1-xSnO3 (SSO) exhibit robust doping and high carrier mobility over a wide range of carrier concentrations, making it a promising candidate for ultra-wide bandgap (UWBG) semiconductors in power electronics applications. The study uses Nd as a donor to modulate carrier concentration successfully, showing the highest room-temperature mobility among all known UWBG semiconductors. The phonon-limited mobility is calculated from first principles and shows agreement with experimental results, predicting potential room-temperature mobility for practical applications.

Observation of suppressed diffuson and propagon thermal conductivity of hydrogenated amorphous silicon films

Yingying Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, hydrogenated amorphous silicon films were synthesized with controlled hydrogen concentrations using plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition. It was found that the reduction in thermal conductivity of the films was attributed to the suppression of diffusons and propagons contributions as the hydrogen concentration increased.

Strain Relaxation via Phase Transformation in High-Mobility SrSnO3 Films

Tristan K. Truttmann et al.

Summary: The study investigated strain relaxation in the epitaxial, tetragonal phase of Nd-doped SSO films grown on GSO substrates and its influence on the electronic transport properties. It was found that the tetragonal phase remained fully coherent until it completely transformed into the orthorhombic phase, with a significant increase in mobility between 12 and 330 nm.
