Exciton-assisted electron tunnelling in van der Waals heterostructures

Lujun Wang et al.

Summary: The authors demonstrate exciton-assisted resonant electron tunnelling in van der Waals heterostructure tunnel junctions. They reveal tunnelling mechanisms involving indirect or direct excitons and optical emission driven by inelastic electron tunnelling. The study highlights the importance of materials with well-defined interfaces and the potential for van der Waals material-based optoelectronic devices.

Reproducibility in the fabrication and physics of moire materials

Chun Ning Lau et al.

Summary: Overlaying two atomic layers with a slight lattice mismatch or at a small rotation angle creates a moire superlattice, which has properties that are markedly modified from (and at times entirely absent in) the 'parent' materials. Moire materials have advanced the study and engineering of strongly correlated phenomena and topological systems in reduced dimensions. Understanding electronic phases like superconductivity necessitates precise control in fabrication, involving the rotational alignment of two atomically thin layers with high angular precision.

Evidence of a room-temperature quantum spin Hall edge state in a higher-order topological insulator

Nana Shumiya et al.

Summary: This study provides micro-spectroscopic evidence for the presence of a room-temperature quantum spin Hall edge state on the surface of a higher-order topological insulator. The research reveals the microstructural features of the topological phase and suggests further exploration of high-temperature transport quantization.

Correlated interlayer exciton insulator in heterostructures of monolayer WSe2 and moire WS2/WSe2

Zuocheng Zhang et al.

Summary: This study reports the observation of a correlated interlayer exciton insulator in a double-layer heterostructure composed of a WSe2 monolayer and a WS2/WSe2 moire bilayer. A new interlayer exciton insulator emerges when electrons are added to the WS2/WSe2 moire bilayer and an equal number of holes are injected into the WSe2 monolayer.

Emergence of Interlayer Coherence in Twist-Controlled Graphene Double Layers

Kenneth A. Lin et al.

Summary: In this study, we observed enhanced interlayer tunneling in a twist-controlled double monolayer graphene heterostructure when the top and bottom layer filling factors are near specific values, leading to stable interlayer conductance peaks at zero bias, regardless of variations in layer filling factor, indicating the emergence of interlayer phase coherence.

Twist Angle-Dependent Interlayer Exciton Lifetimes in van der Waals Heterostructures

Junho Choi et al.

Summary: This study explores how the twist angle between two monolayers in van der Waals heterostructures can control the exciton dynamics, affecting the interlayer exciton lifetimes significantly. Theoretical models separate two mechanisms influencing the radiative lifetimes and predict distinct temperature dependence of interlayer exciton lifetimes at different twist angles.

Resonant Light Emission from Graphene/Hexagonal Boron Nitride/Graphene Tunnel Junctions

Anna Kuzmina et al.

Summary: By controlled stacking of graphene layers, the limitation of single-layer graphene as a material for light-emitting devices has been overcome, enabling twist-controlled resonant light emission. Experimental findings show light emission irrespective of the crystallographic alignment between the graphene electrodes, with a spectrally tunable resonant peak in the near-infrared range.

Modulation of optoelectric properties of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides placed on a metal pattern

Shrawan Roy et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that atomically thin monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenides (1L-TMDs) transferred onto patterned platinum (Pt) stripes exhibited reduced photoluminescence intensities and shifted peak positions due to charge transfer to Pt. Additionally, a local p-doping effect induced by Pt was observed, leading to enhanced photocurrent. This suggests that charge modulation through patterned metal can provide a simple lateral homojunction for improved photovoltaic applications.

Correlated electron-hole state in twisted double-bilayer graphene

Peter Rickhaus et al.

Summary: This study discovered a correlated electron-hole state in double-bilayer graphene twisted to 2.37 degrees, where moire states retain much of their isolated bilayer character. This allows the generation of an energetic overlap between narrow isolated electron and hole bands with good nesting properties, leading to the formation of ordered states with reconstructed Fermi surfaces consistent with a density-wave state that can be tuned without introducing chemical dopants.

Summary: This review summarizes the recent progress on how to circumvent Fermi-level pinning (FLP) between 2D TMDs semiconductors and metals, including introducing related concepts, discussing factors contributing to FLP, and strategies of Fermi-level depinning. The summary and outlook provides a guideline for suppressing FLP in the process of fabricating high-performance 2D TMD devices.
