High-Throughput Design of Interfacial Perpendicular Magnetic Anisotropy at Heusler/MgO Heterostructures

Sicong Jiang et al.

Summary: This study presents a high-throughput screening approach to find candidate Heusler/MgO material interfaces for spintronic applications. By utilizing open quantum material repositories and conducting large-scale ab initio calculations, the researchers identified five full-Heusler compounds and two half-Heusler compounds as promising candidates for designing p-MTJs.

Enhancement of voltage controlled magnetic anisotropy (VCMA) through electron depletion

Thomas J. Peterson et al.

Summary: Recent advancements in using an electric field to control perpendicular magnetic tunnel junctions have opened up possibilities for ultra-low energy memory and computing devices. To improve the voltage controlled magnetic anisotropy (VCMA), new materials or stack engineering approaches are needed. By inserting high work function materials underneath the magnetic layer, electrons can be depleted and the VCMA effect can be controlled. Experimental results showed that samples with high work function materials exhibited better VCMA effects compared to control samples.

Heusler alloys for spintronic devices: review on recent development and future perspectives

Kelvin Elphick et al.

Summary: Heusler alloys are theoretically predicted to potentially become half-metals at room temperature. These alloys have advantages such as good lattice matching with major substrates, high Curie temperature above RT, and controllability for spin density of states at the Fermi energy level. They are categorized into half- and full-Heusler alloys based on crystalline structures, with discussions both experimentally and theoretically.

Giant Perpendicular Magnetic Anisotropy Enhancement in MgO-Based Magnetic Tunnel Junction by Using Co/Fe Composite Layer

Libor Vojacek et al.

Summary: The study proposes an alternative design of magnetic tunnel junctions with greatly enhanced perpendicular magnetic anisotropy based on density-functional-theory calculations, utilizing interfacial perpendicular anisotropy and strain-induced bulk PMA in bcc Co. Fe(3ML)Co(4ML)Fe(3ML) is suggested as a storage layer design for MgO-based STT MRAM cells.
