Design of FeSiBPCu soft magnetic alloys with good amorphous forming ability and ultra-wide crystallization window

Xingdu Fan et al.

Summary: The Fe81.3Si4B13-xPxCu1.7 soft magnetic alloys with high Cu and proper P elements addition were synthesized to ensure the amorphous forming ability (AFA) and expand the crystallization window (CW). It was found that an atomic ratio of P/Cu around 3 is advantageous for AFA, and a small amount of P addition promotes the precipitation of alpha-Fe grains. High Cu concentration expands the annealing temperature (Ta) window, while proper P addition enlarges the annealing time (ta) window. The successful synthesis of the Fe81.3Si4B8P5Cu1.7 soft magnetic alloy with a large Ta window of up to 130 degrees C and ta window of 90 min is a breakthrough for nanocrystalline alloys with high saturation magnetization.

Dynamic relaxation behavior and its effect on mechanical properties of FePBCCu amorphous alloy

Long Hou et al.

Summary: This study reports on the significant secondary (β) relaxation process in FeP(B)CCu amorphous alloys with different microstructures, revealing local heterogeneity at the atomic scale. Thermodynamic analysis indicates that the amorphous matrix exhibits more local structural heterogeneities compared to the partially crystallized alloy, attributed to the low activation energy of β relaxation and the high activation energy of crystallization. The physical aging process below the crystallization temperature demonstrates that atomic rearrangement supports the weakening of β relaxation amplitude and the increase of storage modulus, consistent with the increased reduced modulus and hardness obtained from nanoindentation tests. Moreover, the creep curves fitted with the Maxwell-Voigt model reveal that the diffusion and rearrangement of atoms in loosely packed zones corresponding to β relaxation are more active during aging. These findings provide new insights into the dynamic relaxation behavior of FePBCCu amorphous alloy and make it an ideal system for investigating the correlation between relaxation and mechanical deformation.

Nanoscale structural heterogeneity and magnetic properties of Fe-based amorphous alloys via Co and Ni additions

Z. Z. Yang et al.

Summary: The nanoscale structural heterogeneity of Fe80-xMxSi9B11 amorphous alloys was quantitatively investigated using small-angle X-ray scattering and atomic force microscopy. It was found that the structural heterogeneity increases with Ni substitution but decreases with Co content. The changes in structural heterogeneity were verified by the changes in mechanical behavior and magnetic properties.

Effects of oxygen on thermal behavior and magnetic properties of FePC amorphous alloy

Long Hou et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the oxygen content has a significant impact on the thermal behavior and magnetic properties of Fe80P13C7 amorphous alloy, increasing oxygen content can enhance the saturation magnetization of the alloy. Oxygen only occupies one side of the C-centered clusters, breaking Fe-C bonds leads to the formation of more Fe-Fe and Fe-O bonds, strengthening the magnetic properties of the oxygen-contained alloy.

Thermal and magnetic properties of Fe(Co)BCCu amorphous alloys with high saturation magnetization of 1.77 T

Long Hou et al.

Summary: The partial substitution of Fe by Co in Fe83.2-xCoxB10C6Cu0.8 amorphous alloys expands the crystallization window, increases the Curie temperature, and affects the magnetic properties. Co doping regulates the first increase and then decrease of saturation magnetization, achieving a maximum value with 6 at.% Co doping. This study demonstrates the potential of Co doping in improving the magnetic properties of Fe-based amorphous alloys.

Nanocrystalline Fe83Si4B10P2Cu1 ribbons with improved soft magnetic properties and bendability prepared via rapid annealing of the amorphous precursor

Yang Meng et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that nanocrystalline Fe83Si4B10P2Cu1 ribbons obtained through rapid annealing have higher crystallinity and finer alpha-Fe nanocrystallites compared to ribbons prepared through conventional annealing, leading to improved magnetic properties and bendability. Rapid annealing at 520 degrees C for 30 s successfully produced Fe83Si4B10P2Cu1 nanocrystalline ribbons with high saturation magnetization, low coercivity, and enhanced bendability suitable for electronic components with complex geometries.

Revealing the structural heterogeneity of metallic glass: Mechanical and nanoindentation

K. Tao et al.

Summary: Microstructural heterogeneity in metallic glasses plays a crucial role in influencing their mechanical and physical properties. Researchers have found that severe plastic deformation can enhance the spatial structural heterogeneity and reduce the energy barrier for shear transformation zones (STZs) activation. The study suggests that decreasing barriers and increasing nucleation sites of STZs during physical aging to rejuvenation may improve the plasticity in metallic glasses.

Enhanced magnetic softness of surface-crystallized Fe-Si-B-Nb-Mo-Cu amorphous alloys via competitive growth of surface pre-crystals/clusters

Huiyun Xiao et al.

Summary: The surface crystallization of Fe-based amorphous alloys, specifically Fe76Si13B8Nb2xMoxCu1, does not significantly affect the magnetic properties after proper heat treatment, forming a nanocrystalline structure similar to that of fully amorphous samples. This is achieved through the competitive growth of ultrafine nano-grains near the surface and internal grain refinement caused by refractory elements, ultimately leading to regular magnetic domains and good magnetic softness. This research provides guidance for mitigating the deteriorating effects of surface crystallization on magnetic properties, expanding the industrial applications of Fe-based amorphous alloys.

Summary: A revolutionary nanostructure design concept was proposed in this study to improve the magnetic properties of Fe-based alloys by preforming dense nuclei and refining nano-structure via transient metalloid-rich interfaces. A novel alloy composition with superior magnetic properties was developed using only 4.6 wt.% light metalloids, showing great potential as a substitute for commercial bulk Si-steels in soft-magnetic applications.
