Equivalent circuit modelling of large hydropower plants with complex tailrace system for ultra-low frequency oscillation analysis

Yang Zheng et al.

Summary: This paper focuses on investigating the hydraulic factor-induced ultra-low frequency oscillation phenomenon in a large hydropower plant, exploring precise modeling of hydraulic transient characteristics in its complex tailrace system, and revealing feasible oscillation suppression schemes. By combining the telegraphist's equations with the Saint-Venant equations, the study deduces the mathematical expression of the equivalent circuit model (ECM) for open channels and discusses the effectiveness of two oscillation suppression approaches through numerical simulation. The application of equivalent circuit theory in complex hydraulic systems can contribute to research on ultra-low frequency oscillations in hydro-dominant power systems.

Performance enhancement of pumped storage units for system frequency support based on a novel small signal model

Zhigao Zhao et al.

Summary: The study aims to improve the overall regulation performance by proposing a new small signal model, a high-order hydraulic damping model, and capturing new frequency oscillation modes. A co-optimization strategy is presented to coordinate stability-tracking conflict, and a comprehensive evaluation model is used to quantify PSU performance and its contribution to power system.

Stability control of dynamic system of hydropower station with two turbine units sharing a super long headrace tunnel

Wencheng Guo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the stability control of a dynamic system of a hydropower station with two turbine units sharing a super long headrace tunnel. The model of the dynamic system was established, stable domain was obtained, and the effects of asymmetric factors on the stability of the hydropower station were revealed. The results suggest that the stability under asymmetric turbine units depends on the total value of asymmetric parameters, with asymmetric characteristics in the dynamic response processes.

A review of dynamic models and stability analysis for a hydro-turbine governing system

Beibei Xu et al.

Summary: Hydropower, as a highly flexible and low-carbon generation method, plays an important role in balancing high levels of wind and solar penetration in electricity grids. However, challenges arise when hydropower is operated flexibly in part-load, overload, or transient conditions, such as improving load measurement and control in the hydro-turbine governing system (HTGS). The review identifies three main challenges in increasing the flexible use of HTGS on the grid: integrating the HTGS and shaft model, developing control methods for HTGS with intermittent renewable energies, and addressing the uncertain nature of load on the overall performance and stability of the hydropower system.
