Kristina O. Kvashnina et al.

Summary: In recent years, the importance of electronic structures in characterizing the chemical properties of actinide containing materials has been increasingly recognized by scientists. High-energy resolution X-ray spectroscopy at the actinide M-4, M-5 edges has emerged as a promising direction, providing key information for understanding actinide properties. Theoretical models describing the observed electronic structure phenomena have advanced alongside technical developments in X-ray methods and experimental discoveries.

Persistence of the Isotopic Signature of Pentavalent Uranium in Magnetite

Zezhen Pan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the isotope fractionation of uranium (U) during reduction and the mineral dynamics of iron oxides. The results suggest that heavy isotopes preferentially accumulate in reduced U species, while light isotopes are more easily released to the surface or aqueous phase. Moreover, the mineral dynamics of iron oxides may leave an imprint on the isotopic signature.

Sulfidation and Reoxidation of U(VI)-Incorporated Goethite: Implications for U Retention during Sub-Surface Redox Cycling

Olwen Stagg et al.

Summary: Over 60 years of nuclear activity have led to a global issue of contaminated land and radioactive waste, with uranium being a significant component. This study demonstrates that iron (oxyhydr)oxides can act as a long-term barrier to uranium migration in the environment. Despite a transient release of uranium ions during sulfidation, uranium overall remains in the solid phase. On reoxidation, uranium associates with iron (oxyhydr)oxide, either as adsorbed uranyl or incorporated uranium species. These findings support the concept of iron (oxyhydr)oxides acting as a barrier to uranium migration even under fluctuating redox conditions.

Assessment of the disposability of radioactive waste inventories for a range of nuclear fuel cycles: Inventory and evolution over time

K. Dungan et al.

Summary: Research shows that implementing a closed nuclear fuel cycle does not have significant benefits in terms of reducing thermal output or radiotoxicity of nuclear waste, but it can greatly reduce the mass of waste going to disposal. Advanced recycling of spent fuel can both reduce waste volume per TWh(e) and dramatically decrease the thermal output of waste and radiotoxic inventory going to a disposal facility through interim storage.

Fe(II) Induced Reduction of Incorporated U(VI) to U(V) in Goethite

Olwen Stagg et al.

Summary: The legacy of nuclear activities has created a global issue of radioactive waste, with uranium playing a crucial role in contamination scenarios. Iron (oxyhydr)oxides could potentially act as secondary barriers to radionuclide migration, but their long-term stability and interaction with biogeochemical processes remain largely unknown. The study showed that U(VI) incorporated into goethite remained stable as U(V) even under iron-reducing conditions, indicating the potential for iron (oxyhydr)oxides to play a role in mitigating radionuclide migration in the environment.

Sulfidation of magnetite with incorporated uranium

Luke T. Townsend et al.

Summary: Uranium is a key environmental radionuclide that can be effectively immobilized by sulfidation of nanomagnetite. Studies show that despite reducing conditions, sulfidation can transfer a significant portion of uranium to the solid phase and retain its stability over a long period of time.
